ORCV Melbourne to Geelong (M2G)

The event known as Geelong.

The final installment of 2011 Winter Series will be the third running of the super increasingly popular event that gets you from Melbourne to Geelong. On Saturday, September 10, the all-in fleet start will see everyone go to a windward mark before the various divisions take off on separate courses to get to that place that knows how to hold a party - Geelong.

If you've been racing in the Winter Series, this is a must do race and you cannot drop the result from this installment. Accordingly, if you're in with a chance at anything from the Lord Warden Trophy down to a place in one of the divisions, you'll need to do well on September 10. No questions asked. One thing you do need to do is complete your FREE entry into the event by adding some information to your existing entry. Please go HERE for that.

Whereas, if you have not been doing the Winter Series and you want to part of all this fun, then you'll need to go HERE to put yourself in for the big bash. Last year, approaching half of the 77 boats that went to Geelong were in either the Cruising with Spinnakers or Cruising without Spinnakers divisions. Apart from getting the boat out of the pen, the overwhelming comment was not only what a good time they all had, but that it was truly sensational to beat all the racing boats in and get the best pens. I think being first in to the bar had a lot to do with it, as well. Now in a world where guarantees are somewhat flexible, the ORCV can actually guarantee that if you do join in one of these two divisions, you will get to Geelong before the others. How? Simple. You go straight there and the two racing divisions have a somewhat more circuitous route to the final destination.

2010_M2G_PoleAxedRohan on Escapde really celebrated...

Roger and Michelle Wale's Pretty Woman kicked us of in Cruising with Spinnakers. They've been joined thus far by Escapade (who did indeed have a big escapade at Geelong last year - the Pole Axed twins....), Phillip Spry-Bailey's Magic and the Jeffery's with PYT (Pretty Young Thing). Stampede and Biddy Hu II have been doing the whole of the 2011 Winter Series and have chosen to go to Geelong in this category, which you can do.

Celebrating its 41st consecutive running -
the Winter Series was first run in 1972
and is still the same format today!

Be a part of the Bay's hottest racing at the coldest
time of year or just pop out at the end, for
the Bay's favourite bash - the event officially known
just as
Melbourne to Geelong,
but you may have other names for it...

Second to None were in fact last to all, but they went two-handed and had a wow of a time, John said.

Great composition, as well.

Sm6M2G10-1241

Sama, sama.

Sm6M2G10-1242

The Elliott CR certainly can make good passage...

Does that count as an Ichi Ban???? Hhhhmmmmm.....

Sm50M2G10-1331

And so we get to Mitch and the gang, but no chicken.

Sm50M2G10-1334

For the composition, the gleaming shore, the last of the 2010 M2G and because my friends, Mitch, Robbie and Hugo were onboard - hero pic!

Sm50M2G10-1337

ORCV Melbourne to Geelong (M2G)

Not done - just yet...

Ah yes. The penultimate round. Often referred to as the championship round in a lot of sports. The third quarter in Australian Rules Football is often referred to as the game maker, too.

Right then. So many images, so much fun during and after racing - well, it just has to be the M2G!!!

With the sun settling down low, as the remnants of Winter are shed and some gaps appeared in the fleet, Steb was able to turn a hand to the artsy fartsy numbers that I really like and wax on lyrical about, whenever I get the chance. A little like Darryl Eastlake, when you think about it...

So then, Warner Wolf we are and many thanks to Steb Fisher for the use of his images.

FleetM2G10-1300

Let's open proceedings with said artsy fartsy numbers... Clockwork and Wicked are the two closest boats.

FleetM2G10-1301

Hero shot.

FleetM2G10-1303

Yes it is a different image - see end of Wicked's boom...

M2G10-1275

Follow the yellow brick road...

M2G10-1276

What a choice!

M2G10-1327

R75M2G10-1328

The Loan Ranger is Halcyon - penultimate finisher.

Sm2M2G10-1263

Like the launch sequence to Buck Rogers in the 25th Century!

Sm2M2G10-1266

Challenge, Clockwork and a little bit of sun.

Sm2M2G10-1271

Sm2M2G10-1274

All aboard Challenge.

Sm2M2G10-IV504

Sm2M2G10-IV506

Another Ichi Ban - a position Challenge are well used to being in and deservedly so. One week later, they would take out the Colts little bash at Geelong on the very same waters... They also took out the Colts prize from Ullman Sails in the 2010 MWS.

Sm2M2G10-IV510

More Ichi Ban - not surprising, really when you look at their crew work. Mark Bulka driving by the looks of it.

Sm4M2G10-1290

Wicked arriving...

Sm4M2G10-1291

This sequence shows just how many images you have to look through and each one has a great 'Steb' and the sun on the crew just adds to it all.

Sm4M2G10-1292

Sm4M2G10-1293

Starting to work it out now.

Sm4M2G10-1294

Yep.

Steb!

Sm4M2G10-IV528

Mike Welsh even spotted our man, now...

Sm4M2G10-IV529

Sm4M2G10-IV530

Faces. Rare one of Mike facing the camera. He of the Loud Shorts actually has pants on - must be cold! The Girl is next to him, beaming as ever. Mark Welsh grinning in the middle there - good thing I know the face or you wouldn't be able to spot him.

Sm4M2G10-IV531

ORCV Melbourne to Geelong (M2G)

Variety.

As in the spice of life...

So, as we approach the end of our resource bank of images for the 2010 M2G, the racing boats are now coming home and it is good to see some faces not sighted since the rounding mark, back over in the Eastern section of the Bay.

Many thanks to Steb Fisher for the use of his images and with that - let's go!

B63M2G10-1246

Sun on boat and a dark sky for contrast. Tremendous.

B63M2G10-1251

We're with Schüss, BTW.

B63M2G10-1256

Got to be close to a brochure shot, pal...

B63M2G10-1260

Classic. In sun on the high side and faces to see.

B63M2G10-1262

Oh. Now this is a GEM.

B63M2G10-IV482

B63M2G10-IV487

B63M2G10-IV492

Bit of heel makes this one better than below - just.

B63M2G10-IV495

B63M2G10-IV497

Well crew - plenty of options there for the all important Xmas gift for the cheque writer!!!!

B331M2G10-1197

Our current HCOTW - Audacious.

B331M2G10-1200

Good stuff.

B331M2G10-IV465

Chris Dickson boom alert!!! Reminds me of that wonderful sticker I saw as a boy in the 70s, in the same sort of layout as an American cigarette pack notice - 'Warning. Skipper's Health Department. The boom can seriously damage your health.'

B353M2G10-IV423

Magazan53 may well be owned by Ocean Racer of the Year - Nick McGuigan, but as of 11/10/10, she's also one of the 25 starters in the M2S, so I guess they are heading South at Xmas...

B353M2G10-IV425

There's Nick.

B353M2G10-IV428

Hi team - your turn coming soon - keep scrollling.

B353M2G10-IV429

B353M2G10-IV430

Everyone aware now...

B353M2G10-IV431

B353M2G10-IV432

And here are the faces for everyone to recognise - send the link to your family so they can see that it is fun (mostly).

B5903M2G10-1161

Spirit of Freya is also doing the 2010 M2S and I know they are off to Hobart at Xmas, most likely M2HE.

B5903M2G10-IV401

B5903M2G10-IV403

Ocean Grading - ala 51st Project.

B5903M2G10-IV404

B5903M2G10-IV407

Our man Doug must have been making sandwiches...

B5903M2G10-IV409

Some other faces for recognising...

B5903M2G10-IV410

B5903M2G10-IV411

Hi Sally.

B5903M2G10-IV413

Blue doesn't fully disguise the plaque...

You know, Doug may have actually gone and got the Araldite out... On ya, Doug!

B9797M2G10-1229

Ninety Seven and Stampede in the background. Neither currently listed for the M2S...

B9797M2G10-1231

Up and on to the other board, please...

B9797M2G10-1233

Right. Ta.

B9797M2G10-1236

Faces.

B9797M2G10-IV474

Wide angle.

G681M2G10-1223

Julian Fox's Nereus, from our hosts at RGYC, in front of 97.

G681M2G10-1225

The cross always looks good as an image.

G681M2G10-1234

Ripper.

R22M2G10-1203

Bombora arriving...

R22M2G10-1206

Great stuff.

R22M2G10-1216

The rolling 'Steb'...

R22M2G10-1219

Almost the new fave - the Stern Wave!

R22M2G10-IV466

R22M2G10-IV470

I liked the way this was framed by the heady and the coachhouse windows.

R22M2G10-IV472

This got the hero pic, as it was more zoomed in and the whole name was in view on the boom - all of which makes it more identifiable as a thumbnail, but the previous image is really the hero pic, as you can see all the faces...

R141M2G10-1172

The ORCV's Tanya Stanford and her Nouannie. Tanya will be finishing all the crews at Stanley. Love your work.

R141M2G10-1175

How good is it with the gull at the mast......

R141M2G10-1179

R141M2G10-1182

Just an Ichi Ban.

R141M2G10-1183

R6418M2G10-1193

Chutzpah 38 arrives.

R6418M2G10-1195

More faces - Hi to 'Splash' - blonde hair and red pants...

R6418M2G10-IV458

Another Ichi Ban.

S390M2G10-1185

Jazzy's already in for the 2010 M2S, as well.

S390M2G10-1188

Wonderful stuff. Look at the spray, yet there's barely a ripple...

S390M2G10-IV453

S390M2G10-IV455

And another Ichi Ban!

Sm460M2G10-IV394

Great image. XLR8 are off to Stanley at the end of the month, as well...

Sm460M2G10-IV395

You know, on any other day, this would have got up for hero pic, but XLR8 had one recently and Bombora have never had one, so instead, it will just have to be this elongated spiel, instead...

Sm460M2G10-IV397

Some of the gang - good warm gear, which you'll need for the M2S.

Sm460M2G10-IV398

Sm3107M2G10-1164

Truly awesome image of Fade 2 Grey.

Sm3107M2G10-1165

Nice smile, pal.

Sm3107M2G10-IV415

Great 'Steb', here...

Sm3107M2G10-IV419

Another GEM of an image.

Sm3107M2G10-IV421

See you gang.

It's like the Kellog's mini cereal packs or the Neopolitan ice cream...

ORCV Melbourne to Geelong (M2G)

Nearly.

Well. Here's the thing. You see, the pages still keep getting hit, so whilst we're definitely nearly done with M2G pics, we're not over - just yet. Sure it is close, very close, but with such a good fleet out for the race and so many good image options, well, we just had to ensure we got around to it all.

Many thanks to Steb Fisher for the use of his images and with that - let's go!

B129M2G10-1139

Slice of Heaven, and Hush, with I dare say, Remedy, in the background. Now just on Slice of Heaven for a second, Anthony Weeks' Sayer 129 is one of the currently 22 starters for the M2S at the end of the month. Go HERE to join the gang sticking their nose out into it for the first time this season.

I would imagine she is a great passage making vessel.

B129M2G10-IV358

B375M2G10-1114

This is the cruiser known as Graf Spee and we saw a bit about her HERE and HERE.

Pretty good too.

B375M2G10-IV336

Yes. We've seen this one before, but what a gem of an image.

Thunder from Brighton.

B1587M2G10-1153

Great stuff indeed.

B1587M2G10-1154

Clipping along nicely.

Nolex 30 time.

B1587M2G10-IV386

R186M2G10-1124

Yoko - designed by Miller and Whitworth - loves a bit of cracked sheet action.

R186M2G10-1125

R186M2G10-IV342

R186M2G10-IV346

A lot of them sail together for years, but they also manage to take newbies out, too...

R186M2G10-IV347

That man Trevor Huggard on the wheel. Stay aware of the boat and him - more on it all, soon enough...

R880M2G10-1141

Alien - so the Div2 racers caught up to the cruising boats.

R880M2G10-IV361
