ORCV Next Gen Program

Getting Young Sailors on Deck and Offshore

Overview

The Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV) supports the next generation of offshore sailors through our Youth membership and the Next Gen Program—a practical initiative connecting young people aged 16–24 with experienced skippers for supported boat deliveries and offshore racing pathways.

Next Gen bridges the gap between youth sailing and offshore experience, providing real opportunities, structured training, and mentorship.

What Is It?

The ORCV Next Gen Program is built around three core pillars: Training, Opportunity and Safety, giving young sailors a clear, supported pathway into offshore racing.

Who Is It For?

Young sailors under 25 who are:

  • Keen to develop offshore skills
  • Committed to learning and building trust with a skipper
  • Interested in cruising or racing offshore

We recommend participants:

  • Complete the Safety & Sea Survival Course (SSSC)
  • Complete a minimum of 3 inshore sails with their skipper before going offshore

Why It Matters

Many young sailors struggle to access larger boats and offshore racing after finishing youth programs. Next Gen removes that barrier by:

  • Providing supported access to experienced skippers
  • Offering affordable, structured training pathways
  • Creating long-term mentoring relationships
  • Building a clear progression into offshore racing

This isn’t a one-off opportunity—it’s a pathway into the sport.

It’s not just a single sail—it’s a pathway into the sport.

How Do I Get Involved?

Step 1: Join ORCV

All ORCV Youth members are included in the Next Gen program - Join ORCV for only $100 (special membership offer ends 30 June 2026, save $45).

Step 2: Take Advantage of our Next Gen benefits:

1. Structured Training - 50% off for Next Gen

Next Gen provides access to key ORCV training courses at 50% off, equipping sailors with the skills required to step confidently into offshore sailing.

The ORCV runs a range of training courses, including:

There’s plenty more to choose from!

Start with SSSC, build your skills across key disciplines, then apply them offshore.

2. Real Offshore Opportunities

Next Gen connects young sailors with experienced skippers, creating opportunities to join boats for deliveries and offshore racing.

These experiences provide hands-on learning in:

  • Real offshore conditions
  • Crew dynamics and teamwork
  • Life onboard during extended passages

It’s not just training—it’s real time at sea, with the right support around you.

When you join ORCV, a member of our team will contact you to discuss your path into ocean sailing.

3. Discounted Offshore Gear

Through the Next Gen Starter Kit, youth members can access essential offshore equipment at reduced prices.

This removes one of the biggest barriers to getting offshore—the upfront cost of gear—and ensures sailors are properly equipped from day one.
