Patriot pulls out all stops to win Melbourne to Devonport Rudder Cup

Patriot, Jason Close’s J/133 has won the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria’s (ORCV) 195 nautical mile Melbourne to Devonport Yacht Race for the Rudder Cup in which ’J’ boats were successful across the board.

The 195 nautical mile race, which started off Queenscliff at the mouth of Bass Strait on Friday night at 6 p.m, provided tactical and navigation challenges for all.

Close agreed: “It was a challenging race mentally and tactically. The start was fine, but we fell into a hole around Wilsons Promontory for around four hours and had to battle from there.

“We didn’t fully stop, but waiting for the breeze to fill in from the east was hard… There were lots of transition zones, especially leading into Devonport, with light patches thrown it. We sailed well though and we all enjoyed it. We have a good crew of dinghy sailors who kept their heads out of the boat.”

Close acknowledged, “This is the first time we’ve won the Rudder Cup – we’ve finished runner-up a couple of times. It was our qualifier for the Sydney Hobart, so a good result going to that.”

To finish, he said, “I’d like to thank the ORCV and their volunteers. They’re a great organisation that works hard to put on a great event. They also do a lot to promote sailing, which I am also passionate about. They just won the Sports Promotion award (Australian Sailing Awards) again.”

Ginan, a J/111 owned by Nigel Jones and Cam McKenzie, placed second.

“We’re pretty happy the way we went and had a good crew, said Jones, runner-up in the 2022 Westcoaster race. “Unfortunately we had a little incident on the start line with Patriot, which cost us. It was our fault, we take responsibility,” Jones said.

Explaining their tactics, he shared, “We take time to study the weather and tracking. We followed what the tracker said and made full use of the race course, chasing wind angles etc, so we’re happy with how we tactically sailed the race.

“We did the Sydney Gold Coast Race in July, which was also busy with sail changes – the Rudder Cup was a mini version of that. You had to put in the hard work to achieve.

“We used the Code Zero, jib top, staysail and No 2 jib, plus three spinnakers. We used them all! We have an extensive wardrobe for small boat because we’re keen to experiment with sails,” said Jones, whose boat will continue the season with ORCV races, including defending their 2022 Sprint Series title.

A second J/133, Joker X2, owned by Grant Chipperfield and Peter Downdey, won the Double-Handed division. They were uncontactable for comment as they were sailing back to Melbourne.

Peccadillo (Charles Meredith) took multihull line honours, while Paul Buchholz took monohull line honours with his Cookson 50, Extasea. To reach the finish line, Extasea had her challenges too.

Buchholz, Vice Commodore of Royal Geelong Yacht Club and 2023 Ocean Racing Club of Victoria’s (ORCV) Ocean Racer of the Year, explained: “The start went well out the Heads. The weather was pretty good. We had a southerly that petered out on Saturday off Tassie. We went round in circles for about two hours.

“A nor’ westerly of up to 15 knots finally came in and we put up kite and made it to Devonport doing 9 knots. Coming into Devonport though, the Spirit of Tasmania (a large passenger/car carrier) was coming in. We lost around 45 minutes, as we had to drop the kite, gybe and wait for them to move on.

“Overall, it was fine, the sea state was fine, but the forecast was all wrong. It was an enjoyable race though. The breeze was fairly consistent except for the part in the middle. We were lucky we got the change when it came through,” the veteran offshore yachtsman ended.

On arrival Devonport, competitors from the fleet once again enjoyed the hospitality Mersey Yacht Club, which also hosted the prizegiving.

Melbourne to Devonport, ‘Rudder Cup,’ Australia's oldest ocean race, is honoured as the ORCV race that runs on the "Melbourne Cup" long weekend. With a start off Queenscliff, the fleet is racing to Devonport to be greeted and kindly hosted by the Mersey Yacht Club.

Current Race Record:

19h 32m 56s by PROWLER in 1998

Race Director Update Saturday, 4 November 10.20pm

The first boats have just arrived in Devonport. eXtasea has taken Line Honours and the Margaret Holmes Kerr Perpetual trophy for the 1st Monohull yacht to cross the line. Peccadillo our multihull has also finished.
The winds as expected, softened as the change came through and are expected to build slightly with the remainder of the fleet now doing good speeds and are predicted to be all in early morning and hopefully by 3am Sunday.
From all predictions, they will arrive quickly making it a long and busy night for our volunteer Race Director team, Martin, David & Rik.
It’s not over yet and a little way to go so things can change. Currently, overall predictions from Blue Water Tracks have:
  • Ginan leading Patriot and Cadibarra on AMS.
  • Ginan, leading Patriot and Rush on ORC
  • Carrera S leading Ginan and White Spirit on PHS
  • Joker X2 leading Spirit of Downunder on Double Handed.
We say farewell to Vagabond who is heading back to Melbourne with all onboard OK.
We will be posting as boats finish but you too can keep an eye on the fleet by following the tracker https://race.bluewatertracks.com/2023-melbourne-devonport-rudder-cup

Race Update Saturday, 4 November 2023 at 6:00 pm:

Extasea and multi-hull entrant Peccadillo are 16 nautical miles from the finish, with Carrera S and Rush chasing.
It's been a challenging day of sailing for the fleet across Bass Strait. As predicted, variable wind strengths and direction have made it a very tactical race.

While it could be anyone’s race, the current leaderboard suggests Ginan AMS and ORC Divisions (aka Rudder Cup champions) | Vagabond PHS Division | Joker X2 Double Handed.

Race Update Saturday, 4 November 2023 at 2:00 pm:

Winds are becoming lighter as the fleet sails closer to Devonport. Tasmania may be in sight, but there is still a lot of sailing to go!

Peccadillo leads line honours in the multihull division and Extasea the monohulls. Both yachts have now sailed into a large patch of light winds yet have Tassie in their sights! With approximately 40 nm to go, Carrera S and Rush follow closely, about 10 nm behind. Most of the fleet is still sailing with a good wind but has light winds ahead...

Leaderboard shows Arcadia leading the AMS division | Kioni leading the PHS division | Ginan leading the ORC division | Joker X2 leading the Double-Handed division.

Race Update Saturday, 4 November 2023 at 7:00 am

Extasea is leading the fleet, followed closely by multihull entrant Peccadillo, flying along at 16.2 knots! Carrera S currently leading the AMS and PHS divisions, and Rush is leading the ORC divisions, close behind.

Most of the fleet has the same tactical plan so far. Steering a starboard tack and heading East of rhumb line. Ginan is taking a more Easterly course; we will see if that pays off.

Race Update Friday, 3 November 2023 at 6:00 pm:

The fleet started in a 15-knot southerly breeze and is now sailing across Bass Strait to Devonport in the 195 nautical miles 2023 Melbourne Devonport 'Rudder Cup'

New boats to face tried and true in Melbourne to Devonport Rudder Cup

Over 30 boats are entered in the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria’s (ORCV) 195 nautical mile Melbourne to Devonport Yacht Race, otherwise known as the Rudder Cup, due to start on Friday 3 November at 6pm off Queenscliff in Victoria.

The Rudder Cup is Australia’s oldest ocean race and among the entries in 2023 is Joker X2, Grant Chipperfield and Peter Dowdney’s latest double-handed offering, which he will again co-skipper with Peter Dowdney. The pair won the Double-Handed component of the 2020 race, with Chipperfield’s previous yacht, Joker on Tourer.

Double-handers have long been eligible to win the race overall and this year is no different. However, Chipperfield concedes, “This will be our first major offshore test on the boat together.”

Joker X2 is a J/133 measuring 13.3 metres, larger than the Victorian’s previous yacht, Joker on Tourer, which was 12.5 metres.

“We’ve been doing a lot of work to the boat and getting used to it. We’ve been training and doing some short races as we prepare for offshore double-handed races,” Chipperfield shares. “It’s a big boat,” he adds.

“We bought it around Easter and have been converting it for double-handed racing. I’ve been doing a bit of solo stuff in light airs when Pete’s not available, just to get to know the boat.

“We’re feeling comfortable with it now. We didn’t want to jump straight into offshore racing until we were. Our plans include all the ORCV offshore races, ending the year with the Melbourne to Hobart, to give us more sea time.

“We’ll spend the next two years racing and training for the 2025 Melbourne to Osaka Double-Handed Yacht Race,” Chipperfield says of the 5500 nautical mile double-handed race.

Joker X2 has been pacing and tuning up against another Rudder Cup entrant and fellow J/133 in Jason Close’s Patriot. The difference is that Patriot (Jason Close) will do the race fully crewed.

“We’re happy with our progress against Patriot and we’re looking forward to having her there as a benchmark,” Chipperfield says.

There are five other double-handed entries for Joker X2 to compete against: Maverick (Rod and Tyson Smallman); the 2020 line honours victor Lord Jiminy (Kevin Curtis/Jim Oosterweghel); Blue Water Tracks (Grant Dunoon/Neville Rose); Spirit of Downunder (Rick Whitehouse/Marty Bennett) and Spirit of Freya (Joanne Harpur/Tom Doherty).

Another entry of interest is the brand new Toecutter. The latest Robert Hick design and build, she is co-owned by Brad Bult and Hick, who is in the skipper role. The Hick 10 (33 footer) only hit the water last weekend and will make its offshore debut via the Rudder Cup.

Hick built the boat at Laverton where he also built the mast. Hick is a renowned Australian yacht designer/builder with a penchant for smaller yachts. Among his race winners, Hick most famously designed and built the 1998 Sydney Hobart winner, AFR Midnight Rambler.

Bult, who has co-owned all the previous Toecutters, has also played a part in the new boat: “I’ve been working on it for the last 10 months, while Doug Miles and Paul Cannon have been working on it for 18 months.”

“This (the Rudder Cup) is more of a shakedown to see how the boat goes. We’re looking forward to it. We’re hoping for a heavier race, so that we break anything that might be inclined to break. We’ll sail the yacht to Sydney in early December for the Sydney Hobart then we’re headed to South Australia for the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Race.”

A solid entry list also includes the likes of Vertigo (Tim Olding) which took line honours and won the race overall in 2021, Nigel Jones and Cam McKenzie’s Ginan, the runner-up in the 2022 Melbourne Hobart, Paul Buchholz’s Extasea and Peter Davison’s Arcadia.
