How to Qualify For Hobart

The ORCV Race Committee made the difficult decision to cancel this weekend's Melbourne to Devonport race as a matter of safety due to the forecast of gales and 3-5-metre waves in Bass Strait for the race and days following, making returning to Melbourne difficult. We know there’s been a lot of planning and preparation by skippers and crews for this race.

For the boats entered in this year's Melbourne to Hobart race, please see the NTC5 for your options for how to complete your qualifying passage.  We invite your boat to join the West Offshore Products Coast Sprint Race 2 starting on December 3rd at 9:45am. After the race your boat will be able to continue sailing to complete a non-stop 24 hour passage as a qualifying passage. Note a detailed log of the passage is to be kept and submitted.

Please have a look at your crew lists for Safety and Sea Certifications.  We have a few places available in the Safety & Sea Survival certifications course on November 20 and would prefer the remaining places go to those doing Hobart.   Please note for compliance it's an ORCV requirement that 50% of crew, including the skipper for fully crewed boats and 100% when sailing double handed are Safety & Sea Survival certified.

The office will be in contact with skippers regarding refund or crediting of boat entry fee.  For those that did order crew shirts, these have will be distributed to your club prior to the weekend.

It’s a big decision to cancel the race but the right decision given the circumstances and as we are all sailors, we know how just much work has been done to get ready.

Thank you for the supportive comments and if you have any questions about the qualifying passage for the Melbourne to Hobart, please call our Hobart Race Contact on Grant Dunoon on 0419 388018 orThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Will the Race Record be Broken this Year?

In 1998, Prowler set the race record of 19h 32m 56s for the Melbourne to Devonport, Rudder Cup.

One week out now and the forecast has moved to show favourable winds and a quick sprint across Bass Strait.   Will this be the year that the 1998 race record is broken with what's predicted today as being near perfect in every way.

As 22 crews complete the final preparations to depart Portsea on December 27th at 11.15am, you can follow them on Blue Water Tracks here and also race against the fleet via SailOnline here too.  Sail online or follow the race.
