Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

Oh Lord!

INSXX_Hoist

No. It is not a Mercedes-Benz. It's the Lord Warden Trophy. Eh? Well, we don't have a Benz on offer (or a Porsches for your friends for that matter), but it's the kind of focus pictured above, that has got 'INSX' the Lord Warden Trophy for the 2009 MWS (lowest point score from all Divisions). Well done team!

Now we met the super-focussed mastman in the pic above, one Stephen 'Jamboy' Hill, in an earlier piece (which is HERE). Rob Sill bought the NSX38 in 2006 at the behest of his sons, who are also onboard. Rob wanted to buy a cruising boat after a 10 year absence from the sport, but they had other ideas. Way back when, Rob had boats like 'Black Magic', but a hip operation this year has seen him wearing the smoking jacket and slippers down at the nav desk, while his sons and the crew continued to ply their craft. They won their division in the 2008 MWS, however this year, a second was their worst result, so six points (their six Firsts and the drop was the Second) was well and truly going to be hard to beat and had them a few points clear and truly in front of the next boat.

The crew have been together for two and a half years and been very consistent, just like their boat speed, which has poured over onto the results table.

Now speaking of crew, Marcus Sill has been organising the crew and doing the Office, Tony Tanner has been on the Main, Tim Smith and Ross Thompson have trimmed, while James 'Cyclone' Bacon has been driving this year. The have have some real multi-skilled and multi-tasking people at the stick and forward, with Stephen, whom we already know of, the other brother, Julian Sill, and right up the pointy end is a soul simply referred to as 'Jungle'. Hhmmm. Not sure how much we want to unravel there... so I won't!

INSX3

"The stronger breezes this year have really suited us (Editor - that has to be an understatement of glorious proportions and developed from the bar afterwards, not out on the water at the time. Talk it up, huh??? Oh yeah - that's my job... Sorry). We had a great series really and it's a big 'thank you' to the ORCV for putting on the series and changing the M2F to the M2G. What a great precedent!!! It was terrific to end the MWS in Geelong and of course, the Lamby's", Marcus said to me today. (Editor - Aw Schucks. Thanks.)

Seems they were not on their own on a deserted beach talking to 'Wilson' about the M2G! Thank you for all your calls, comments and emails about that one. Your Committee have been advised of such. 'INSX' will be doing an M2HE and the whole Melbourne Offshore Championship this Summer. We'll be watching and remember, M2S is but around the corner...

Melbourne to Geelong (M2G)

Better to be looked over than overlooked!

Almost one hundred, hand picked images from the great inaugural M2G race await you - so get a bottle of red this time, not a glass. You'll need it. I did after prepping all these pics! Many thanks to Don Fraser for taking the punishment in the photography boats to bring you these great shots. Cheers pal.

Also, it was great to meet so many new faces down there and I appreciate your comments. If you have something to say, then email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with your thoughts.

All right. On to the pics. You'll find them in three broad categories. Early on near Melbourne, approaching the finish and crew shots.

WineGlassPeregrine

'Peregrine' had a few issues getting the Bag organised after R2... Interesting place to keep the pole. Let alone the two metres of halyard left to go.

WineGlass2 WineGlass3

...and Don was there to catch it. Not sure of the outcome with 'Soiree Blue' here, so if anyone knows...

WineGlass4

Yep. That's going to take a bit to get out. Ease the brace forward and yank on the clew. Then pray.

Chikara

Bill told me he was happy to get the kite set and accelerate off to 18 knots and get out of the mass of boats 'Chikara Outlaw' had found themselves in as a result of their very late start.

DivZero

The Division Zero gang sprinted up the one and half or so miles to R2.

Extasea

2008/09 MOC winners, 'Extasea', get ready for the Bag.

FleetGoesDownhill

The last of the fleet go around and below, everybody plowed South...

FleetDownhill

Gienah Godzilla

'Gienah' on the left here and 'Godzilla', right, as they both set up for their hoists

GoldieLaunch

'Goldfinger' hoists away and 'XLR8' head up to the mark all firmly stacked on the rail. See. More nice comments for you Ian and Sandra.

INSX INSX2

'INSX' were off and flying - well most of the time anyway.

JAMHU3 JAMHU2

'JAHMU 2' set about getting the launch ready to go.

Magazan1 Mirrabooka

On the left it is 'Magazan 53' and on the right, it is 'Mirrabooka'

Mirrabooka2 Mirrabooka3

'Mirrabooka' finishes the preparatory work - my knees would not allow me to do that anymore...

Mirrabooka4 OceanSafari

Loved the nav light glowing here on 'Mirrabooka'and it is 'Ocean Safari' on the right, also with a bright bit on display.

Peregrine Silk

'Peregrine' giving the halyard plenty and 'Silk' in these next three going about their business. Bet they're glad they made it to Geelong for the bash despite retiring...

Silk2 Silk3

SkinsBow

'Ocean Skins' getting ready and below right it is 'Veloce' showing their prep skills.

SkinsBow2 VeloceLaunch

Vantage TheSecretary1

'Vantage' on the left and 'The Secretary' on the right and below. Would have been ideal weather for both boats.

TheSecretary2 TheSecretary3

TheSecretary4

Living legend, Jim Close, one of our country's absolute blue water masters, once said to me "You cannot push a rope!" Seemed very apt here.

Wicked1 Wicked2

'Wicked' revved it up in these three pics here and on the dance floor later, so I knew Smithy and the Girl would be a safe bet in the party department... Nice joke too Smithy. Wally was giving it the rounds the next morning.

Wicked3

And so we move into the crew pics section...

ACM

'Audi Centre Melbourne' have had a great time with the new and improved boat. Little wonder that Chris is so happy with Greg Elliott then.

BeyondO

Out in front and got the Division Two gun. Cool. They celebrated before crossing the line and seemed pretty chuffed here, back in the Wilson Spit Channel.

BiddyHu3

Heading South for the first time this year and doing M2S next month as well. Paul and the team on 'Biddy Hu II'.

Calm6

'Calm' had a great one and nearly got IRC as well as LH. Ring-in from 'Cougar II' (Peter with his hands out) came along to help Dad celebrate. Mums, wives and babies greeted the clan at RGYC. Below is the Birthday Boy himself, collecting one of his prizes from ORCV Rear Commodore, Don Fraser.

WillowPrize

CanCan

The team on 'Can Can' - that wind had kicked in by then or what?

Clockwork

Orange must mean it is the Dutch or then again, 'Clockwork'. Yep. it is 'Clockwork'.

Crackerjack

'Crackerjack' responded to being named in an earlier article by showing up for the M2G (read it HERE if you'd like). Thanks team. So glad you had such a good time and all the laughs. You're leading a trend for other Bay racer types and ensuring it is all a bigger and better affair next year. Some even went the whole way in shorts!!! One million bonus points there, Wally.

Dream

'Dream' team. Oldie but a goodie...

Extasea3

'Extasea' - before it all went a bit feral near Cunningham Pier.

Extasea4

Godzilla2

'Godzilla' picked up the Race Director's "Happiest Crew On The Water" prize. Not sure what they get, but good work when you can get it.

Godzilla3

GoldieHiking

The 'Finger' does an awesome job of hiking. Nice one team. That's Chris Smethurst out the furthest.

INSX3

Not sure which one is Stehpen 'Jamboy' Hill, but the 'INSX' crew were all smiles around Geelong.

Magazan2

Nick McGuigan and crew of 'Magazan 53'. Nick was the one taking the photos at the presentations.

Matrix

Now Amber and the girls off 'Matrix' swear they didn't jump for joy as they crossed the finish line. I had a bit on at the time, so could not get a pic, but everyone seems fired up here. Where there's smoke....

Matrix2

Mirrabooka5

David Bingham drives his 'Mirrabooka'. Focussed. We like that.

MoceanCrew

'Mocean's crew knew the camera was on them.

MoceanCrew2

TheSecretary5

Another vibrant and enthusiastic bunch came to Geelong on 'The Secretary'. That's Michelle Tapp, the most left on the rail.

TheSecretary6

'The Secretary' and yes, that toe rail does hurt...

Vantage2

'Vantage' were definitely happy to be out there.

XLR8Crew

Yet more nice pics and words for the 'XLR8' gang.

Yoko

Robin Hewitt's 'Yoko' has introduced a lot of people to the sport over the years.

97_4

'Ninety Seven' are a happy bunch, unlike us Hawthorn supporters.

Finally then, it is the approaches to Geelong in the Wilson Spit and Hopetoun Channels.

GoldieFinish

I had an idea why 'Goldfinger' crossed the line under main alone. The Jib Topper is rated to 20 and the regatta main to 30 knots, and it was well and truly past all of that when they arrived. It was only when the pics came in that I saw why they would have been happy to take the heat out of it all, within sight of the line. As we all know, the bullets down at Geelong can be significant.

GoldieBitOn

Definitely a bit on there!

GoldieRecovered

Then everything is just peachy again. You might think the big blast reacher is not trimmed correctly, but it is only rated to twenty (which you can see from how transparent it is), so is actually feathered quite nicely to allow the air to exhaust out of the top of it very well. Perhaps a little barber haul down to straighten the leech out a little, but then again picky, picky, picky. Well done Dean 'Used to be Magnum P.I' Robson. Your wife's going to hate that you get the good press! (FYI - she's the Sandra from 'XLR8' mentioned elsewhere)

GoldieTransom

Hugely powerful boat and shot. Peter Blake, who's driving, would have been loving that.

GoldieTransom2

Rail in the drink, Peter's hand already moving left, foils are still gripping and a bit of vang let off from the chicken pedal (hydraulic vangs can be released via a button under the helmer's feet to give rapid de-powering where required). About three shots down you'll see how high the boom is, as a result of the vang release.

GoldieTransom3

Absolutely max Larry (load) here and she finally slips up (below), responds to her helm and then charges back off towards the line, in the remainder of the sequence pictured below. Blast Reacher (Jib Topper) survived with only a minor tear Kate Mitchell told me, so that would have kept the owners happy!

GoldieTransom5

GoldieTransom6

GoldieTransom7

IceFire

'Ice Fire' already had a much smaller #4 up when one of those bullets had them getting the boom in the drink.

JAMHU4

'JAHMU 2' was going for the headsail peel from their blast reacher (lighter colour) to a #4 (dark).

JAMHU5

Plenty on there!

JAMHU6

Oops. Headsail back behind the main and wet and so then even heavier...

JAMHU7

Make that a loooooooooong way behind the main. Still they got it in and all was good - in the end.

Calm

Where as only a little while before hand, the leaders had glided through in stunning conditions with a genoa staysail up, to boot.

Calm7

ACM2

Down the back corner and as far as you can get out!

Skins

'Skins' were the last ones in before the big squirts arrived.

GeelongBlowing

This is what the inner harbour looked like once it had settled in....

UnderCapricorn1

Under Capricorn had a more civilised entry, but those waves were building and it is her joining 'XLR8' in the round up party in the image directly above.

JazzPlayer

Jazz Player put a slab in... Good call.

OceanSafari2 OceanSafari3

'Ocean safari' also had a wild ride.

Peregrine2 Peregrine3

'Peregrine' gets a bullet too, as the Oil Rig Tender departs.

Remedy

'Remedy' hangs on. Remember they were going two up...

VeloceReach

It was blowy as, when 'Veloce' got there.

Spirit

'Spirit of Downunder' turned around and went home. Lozza now regrets missing the party....

Artsy Fartsy...

ArtsyFartsyNot

Art....Not! The Boss killed himself with laughter over the flossing comment from a few weeks ago and so pointed out that 'Addiction' was out again for the M2G not having flossed before leaving. Accordingly, here's the pic.

ArtsyFartsyXLR8

Look Sandra!!! Nice pic and even nicer words for you.

See. Aren't I good to you guys on 'XLR8'?

Melbourne to Geelong (M2G)

What's the 'Remedy' for sheepish behaviour then?

Remedy1 Remedy2

Simple. Just go the other way. So what does that all mean then? You'll just have to read on...

Now after having to postpone the start, as so many boats headed off up North when they left their marinas, leaving half of the fleet to be decimated by a mass OCS, it eventually was a clean start won by 'The Secretary' with 'Calm' coming along very quickly too. 'The Secretary's driver, George Shaw told me that "A hole just appeared before us like divine intervention and we simply slipped on through." Good one for them and what a busy line it was with all manner of vessels in all states of readiness. Breeze was a true North of originally ten when we were laying the marks, but very quickly more like 20+ as it all got underway. ‘Kingurra’ was in front of the Committee Boat ensuring they did not get wound up in the anchor chain, as they came back around to go through correctly, which you can see in the pic below.

Start

It was then back up to R2 some 2nm further North, where there was a gate for the fleet to work through and then head back South again to SYC 5 for Division Two and Carrum #2 for Div1. And it is the gate that we are going to talk about now. Just two boats went around the laid mark on the port side. True, the R2 end was favoured, but not when you consider the breeze building in the middle of the Bay. The first boat was ‘XLR8’ and they looked like the young pioneers out on their own. The other boat to do it was ‘Remedy’, who feature in the opening pictures, sailing two up. So many boats went past R2 just to make it around, even when all they had to do was flop over and go around the port marker. It really did look like sheep from the Committee Boat and we could not understand why the Naviguessers did not see it.

All right. We're all geniuses, OK, and I don't want to be seen as kicking someone when they're down. ‘Remedy' picked up 15 places by doing this rounding to port and XLR8 also got a handy break out of it too. Alas, at the pointy end of the fleet, you need to be on your game perpetually and the gybe to bring them back in did not go well. Maybe they yanked the sheet on too early, or drove under it, but they wrapped it and it took a while to get out. What we can say is there were no runners on the sheet and too many people were not looking forward at the time. Anyway, enough said, but I think I had better watch where I walk!

XLR8OK1

Young pioneers out on their own.

XLR8OKGybe

Setting up for the gybe.

XLR8Gybe2

Toyota Hilux moment right there. Remember. "Buggah!"

XLR8Gybe3

It's now on it's way to being expensive.

Let's move on to the good stuff. The winners. ‘Calm' was driven today by John ‘Willow' Williams and all he had to say was "...the BEST birthday present ever!" Onboard to celebrate the grand occasion with him were his four children, Peter, Bruce (new dad himself - well done pal), Mike and Elizabeth. Nice one. No wonder it was the best and so a real Bill and Ted style "Excellent" goes out to you Willow.

WinnersArriving

'Calm' took out Line Honours. As they arrived I wondered to myself, "Where's the Bag guys?" Then I had a look see back down the channel...

WinnersArrivingBeyondO

'Beyond Outrageous' was the first boat home in Division Two. Might be a bit premature on the celebrations, but it was daylight for second. their super-enthusiastic crew collected more than a few bottles of wine at the presentations, which managed to keep their spirits high for at least another hour.

WinnersArrivingZilla

'Godzilla' has had a fantastic MWS and capped it off with a win in the inaugural M2G as well.

Other winners of the day, who were definitely grinning, were 'Audi Centre Melbourne', who nailed IRC and AMS. Chris Dare was very keen to get this race happening and "...will be telling everyone just how good it has been! We hit over 24 knots today. It was just great and a heap of fun." The next round of mods is happening this week and the soon-to-be-on-us Melbourne to Stanley will be a good test for his Hobart crew who will be onboard for that race. "The square top main should be exciting, so let's bring it on. Every time we've done well in the MWS, we've had a good Summer too." Excellent news and we look forward to seeing it as well.

LastBoatAround

Last boat around R2 was 'Pretty Woman', but as Don Fraser just reminded me - "Not the last to finish though!" Don is off to the left of this image, aboard 'Cerebus' and this image below is one he took back towards yours truly on the bow of 'Thorsen'.

Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

51 boats, 25 degrees

and 15 to 20 knots from the North.

And that’s just got to be an awesome set of numbers for the inaugural Melbourne to Geelong race tomorrow, Saturday September 12.

LozzasPinkKite

You didn’t read it here, but with those breezes I would be tipping the 54nm Course Four for Division One and Course Five for Div Two. Yep. Everyone’s on the one start line, so keep the heads clear tonight.

Also, make sure you have the ears on in the morning however, as Course Three (58nm) may just get up for Div One… Giddy Up or what! It’ll be a massive kite run if that ends up being the case.

So that means it will be a great day’s racing and then a great party too, with over 90 percent of the fleet already telling the organisers that they’re staying for the bash at the end. “What a great thing it is to have a new event patronised like this.” An excited Race Director, Simon Dryden, told me today. “We look forward to seeing everyone bright and early around R2.”

Click HERE for the M2G background information and details of Geelong activities for notes for sore heads.

So anyway, the 15 to 20 is what I'm told, which is a long way off todays 50 and Predictwind's 10 to 15 for tomorrow. Go figure again eh?
