Where there's smoke...

2010_MWS_SmokeFlare

There is fire - and Wicked was certainly on fire for the opening round of the Melbourne Winter Series, with a win in IRC Div1 and AMS Div1.

Well done to Mark Welsh and the crew. "We had a sensational race.... One of those (rare) days when everything just goes right. We came off the start well down at the pin end and had enough speed to squeeze through Chutzpah38 and subsequently, into clear air. Our game plan was always to head to the left side of the course, where we thought there was more breeze. This decision turned out to be the right one, blissfully. Our speed uphill was helped by a relatively new "Super Light" jib from North Sails. We rounded the top mark up close to Extasea, which we were very happy with." I would say so, Mark!

"Downhill, we hung onto Chutzpah38. You can imagine that we were happy with this effort, given that the 38's weigh less than us. They are a challenge for us in less than 10knots of breeze. We kept the boat moving well at all times for the rest of the race and didn't really get out of phase with the shifts. This, along with great crew work, where nothing went wrong, really was the story of our day..... Great to be out racing as part of such a red-hot fleet."

2010_MWS_OrangeFlare

Mystery Man lobbed in with these great images of the annual practice flare shoot that occurs before the first race - thanks pal.

From out on the track, Race Director, Robyn Hewitt, passed on this information. "It was all about gung-ho starts, which were complicated by a half knot tidal current on the nose. We had three OCS for the Div1 start and FIVE were OCS for the Div2 start. The breeze was just 4kts from 315degM." All I can say is all the pre-event ra-ra must have got everyone fully fired up. Nice work!!!

The forecast had suggested there would be the possibility of a morning race and then maybe nothing for the afternoon. Accordingly, "We decided on a short course race, so we could get a result for the first one and maybe then have a chance at the second. There was a small lull in the wind, just after the starts, but it recovered to a maximum of 7kts but mostly hung in at the 4kts mark."

"Even with all that planning, it was necessary to shorten course for both divisions and the last finisher made it by just a minute or so before the time limit. The shortened course finished at a gate, which caused some confusion for a few. Living Doll was easily the fastest yacht in the conditions, whilst the light breeze suited some, but caused some mixed results in the fleet. I suspect this race will not be a guide to the series. (We have not had a light series for a while)", Robin went on to add and I hope, not put the hex on it all...

"Using the tidal current appeared to be a good strategy", Robin observed. "No more racing was signaled for the day, which proved to be justified and apologies for not letting the early finishers know sooner, but there was a lot happening on the Committee Boat. We very much wanted to have the latest weather research completed after the last finishers, before deciding on whether to run another race. At least we now have one race on the books." Quite so, Robin!

In the Colts, first was Chutzpah38, then Audacious, Challenge, Clockwork and Mille Sabords. IRC Div1 was Wicked, then Goldfinger and Chutzpah38. IRC Div2 was INSX (Our current Lord Warden Trophy holders), with Hush and Nouannie in third.

AMS Div1 was Wicked, Chutzpah38 and Extasea, with Div 2 as Rogue Trader, Nouannie and Hush. PHS Div1 was Goldfinger, XLR8 and then Wicked, whilst Div2 was Rogue Trader, new(ish) Skipper Jo Harpur and Spirit of Freya and INSX in third.

No sun, but a Golden day none the less.

Seems a terribly inspired Golden Girl got up for a third in IRC and first in PHS, by around 3 minutes, today. Must remember to put a few rockets in my backpack for the future...

Anyway, they 'plan to go out and play with Calm and Living Doll (when in town) all over again', was the quote. She's yours for $750k or $800k with a new main and even the crew, apparently. Much easier to afford, but definitely not as appealing for me, was the offer of Leith Hore for a six pack and warm sheep. 'Poor sheep' was my response...

CMS6_AM_GoldProfile

Also enjoying a bit of gold, it would seem, was Chutzpah38. A review of the MWS results and a spiel to boot, will follow, soon enough. For now, here's a pic...

Mystery Man has provided us with this shot of a rocket, from today's practice flare shoot (Sunday 04/07/10 @ 0930hrs). Thank you pal... Goldie must have been watching?

Battle Royal.

No matter whether you're 30 feet, 40 or even 50, it's going to be game on tomorrow, Sunday July 4, in the opening round of the Melbourne Winter Series.

There is a fantastic fleet that is going to amass for the first race in what looks to be mild conditions. One of the main battles will be amongst the Colt 38s (read Sydney 38), as they prepare for their next round of titles. You've got Audacious, the Doyen and his Challenge, Clockwork, Chutzpah38 and our new pals, Mille Sabords.

2010MTHAudacious2

Our current Happiest Crew on the Water holders are going to be part of the stoush amongst the Colts.

There's also the three Beneteau First 40's. The seasoned Wicked, Second to None and new player, Halcyon. The first 2010 MWS entrant, Bombora, will be hoping to get a piece of that action too, all the while 2009 M2HW winner, Jazz Player will be going about her business. Whilst still in the 40's, we have Schuss and Icefire to look at and they will certainly be looking at current Offshore champs, Extasea.

Goldfinger and XLR8 will keep themselves entertained, whilst Calm and Living Doll duke it out for the bragging rights at the pointy end.

Ian and our pals on Beyond Outrageous will be itching to get the Bag up (as per above) and Matrix will want to see that action and raise them a kite or two. Alibi and Gienah will be eyeing off and in the lighter airs, I would want to know where Godzilla and Nutcracker were.

I also want to know what is going to transpire amongst our women skippers like Kathryn de Garis, Jo Harpur and Tanya Stanford. Who'll blitz, who'll be smiling?

All in all I just can't wait for the results myself, so I hope everyone has a great time at the flare shoot and an even better one out on the track from half ten!

Groove Armada.

Put out some excellent albums, with titles like Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub), Vertigo and Black Light.

The pretty groovy and fashion conscious, Michael Hiatt, has just become somewhat of a Commodore. As a result of his recent purchase of two Etchells from Team Pegasus in the USA, Michael now has his very own armada over at RYCV. Joining the much loved Farr55, Living Doll, will be her two little Sisters, Bad Doll and Extra Bad Doll.

EBDtransom

Nice little carbon fibre touch there...

The Etchells programme is about getting back into the core level of sailing. Helming, tactics, crew work and really understanding boat speed and how to achieve/maintain it were seen as the benefits. "We had looked around at some sportboats, like the Melges 32, but when you boil it down, the best sailors and the best competition is in the Etchells and that is what we were searching for", Michael said.

"It isn't that expensive to get into, you know. The complete wardrobe for both Etchells cost me less than one kite for the big boat", Michael went on to add.

MichaelAndTiller

This posi for light weather only - Improving skills and crew work was what the new Etchells programme is all about.

Mooloolaba was a baptism of fire, but "...really enjoyable". Of the recent Musto Etchells Australasian Winter Championships, Michael said, "I thought we were pretty much equal to the task in the heavy airs, but less so in the light stuff. The angles, with no Ace and in different breezes is fun to learn and it only took us three goes to work out that we shouldn't gybe set at the top mark!"

Returning back to Melbourne they ventured over to RBYC for a set of races last weekend in the cold. "We'll have to get some serious wet weather gear for that", Michael said. Extra Bad Doll did really well and in the second race got the gun by about 3m over Melbourne Etchells Fleet Captain, Jake Gunther. "This boat came out for the second race and we were having a great time trying to stay in front. It wasn't until we finished, that we worked out who it was. It was a small fleet and we're not reading too much into it... We got lucky!"

"So far it has been fun and we are 120% into it. It is as important to me as the big boat stuff", Michael finished with.

MichaelAndBoat

Michael is going to be putting as much effort into the Etchells, as the big boat campaign.

So then, to the biggun. Living Doll will be starting her Winter prep this weekend, as they get ready for the annual adventures up North. In the middle of the month, the trek will begin, culminating at Airlie Beach. As the full crew is in Melbourne, Michael indicated they'll pop out for the first round of the MWS on Sunday.

The Handicapper.

Never gets it right, according to all sailors, but if you would like to give him/her an ear bashing or case of wine, then you have until midday on Friday 02/07/10 to "discuss" it. Start with calling the office or Simon Dryden, I would think... NB: To be in a measurement division, you must have a current certificate! QED.

BTW, if you have all your paperwork in place, then you can still enter the MWS and see how you match up to the Bay's battle hardened crews, of which there are now 38 of them (as of 01/07/10), just by getting the NOR and complete the online entry for the 2010 MWS, right HERE. Come on. What else are you going to do? Stay warm, sit in front of the fire and drink red? BTW, the M2G is HERE and remember that Cruising Divisions will be offered for this particular event.
