  We are the ORCV !!

We’ve been weird, wonderful and winners

Casting our gaze over the recent offshore season, the Clean Oceans team are incredibly proud of the efforts and enthusiasm exhibited by the club and members to deliver initiatives in the name of sustainability. The ocean racing community is one of great passion, and a vote for protecting our oceans is a vote for the longevity of the sport we know and love. Let‘s look back over some of the highlights so far:

Sustainabiltiy 5

The ORCV’s destination races saw the introduction of the Species Showcase, a corner that shines the light on unique marine species, iconic to the area our fleet are visiting. Beginning in Hobart with the 2023 Westcoaster, the Handfish became the star of the show, with one species, the critically endangered Red Handfish, found ONLY in the Derwent River. These abstract looking creatures have also attracted the nickname of the world’s rarest fish as their numbers continue to be heavily impacted by habitat change, ocean warming and pollution; and are the focus of a dedicated research conservation team.

Shifting our focus to the Melbourne to King Island, our fleet was greeted by the unmissable chorus of Little Penguins, our next showcased species. For a bird only 30cm in size, these little fellas are truly impressive with their long-distance deep diving, spanning tens of kilometers each day. Recent research investigating growing levels of chemical pollution recorded in the penguins’ blood is a stark reminder that at the end of the day, our land-based actions are intrinsically linked to like above and below the water.

Finally, we wrapped up the season with the crowd favorite, the Nudies! The Apollo Bay race featured the Vercos Nudibranch, a flamboyant and almost fictional looking creature, that inhabits the local marina and coastal reefs along southern Australia. Nudies are the dazzling jewels in the crown of our marine fauna. Like a neon sign, they remind us just how intricate and interconnected the ocean and its life is, and what wonders lay beneath the surface.

Sustainabiltiy 4

As well as showcasing marine wildlife, we have also collaborated with some fantastic organisations working to conserve, educate, create and inspire meaningful change in the ocean community. The ORCV are incredibly grateful to have engaged with the Handfish Conservation project and Otway Ocean Care to promote conservation work, and Recolab and Castaway Textiles, for the work they do to divert waste from landfill while creating stylish and unique produce to be enjoyed by the yachting community and beyond.

Sustainabiltiy 3

We are always looking for innovative ways to engage the ocean racing community with the ocean beyond racing. Over the last 12 months we have worked to further develop the microplastics water sampling initiative for the return legs of major offshore races. Often times, in the science space, deploying teams of researchers at sea can be costly and difficult, and so the idea to create a citizen science program with our fleet, was born. In classic scientific style, we are working through trial and error to optimize and refine the method and data generation process. We look forward to reigniting this program in the new season and thank all the crews who have been part of this process so far!

Sustainabiltiy 2

In recognition of the ORCV’s efforts in the sustainability space, we have been awarded silver medals by the Sailors for The Sea Clean Regatta’s Program for our destination races, a brilliant outcome that we aim to build on with the oncoming season – going for gold! This internationally recognised certification framework is a great way to demonstrate effort over time, and nurture continuous improvement, innovation and creativity. We can’t wait to build on the already strong foundation of the 2023-24 season, so let our team know if you have any ideas or connections you think could add value in the sustainability space!

Sustainability 1

Lasty, a huge thank you goes to our members who continuously show interest and enthusiasm in the Clean Oceans Program. Our members are what bring our initiatives to life and ensure continued stewardship of our oceans

Volunteer and Make a Difference in Sea Safety Training at ORCV

At the ORCV, we take sea safety and survival very seriously. That's why we rely on a dedicated group of trainers who generously volunteer their time and expertise to run our renowned sea safety and survival course. We invite all yacht club members to become a part of this incredible initiative and help us continue to deliver a course that has been trusted by many for over 20 years.

Our volunteers are not just experienced sailors; they are passionate individuals who want to make a difference and stay connected to the sailing community. Whether you're an active sailor or someone who no longer sails but wants to be involved, we welcome you to join our team. By sharing your knowledge and experience, you'll be contributing to the safety and well-being of our members at sea.

Why volunteer with us? It's an opportunity to give back and create a positive impact. When asked, here’s why Bruce, Lucio and Andrew give their time.

“I also volunteer with the Sailing Committee which is very technical getting all the sailing instructions and races ready, so the SSS offers a different practical dimension and when I’ve looked around, the ORCV SSS is the best around.” Andrew McConchie

It’s the little things that I can share and people are always so grateful for what they learn.....It’s an opportunity to give back and pay forward where it’s welcomed to share our knowledge and experiences and it’s great to be amongst those who I’ve sailed with for years“  Bruce Reidy

SSS Volunteers

There's some experience in the group of Assistant Trainers

Our sea safety and survival course is a channel through which you can make a real difference in the sailing community. By imparting crucial skills and knowledge, you'll be empowering fellow sailors to navigate the seas with confidence and competence.

Not only will you be enhancing the safety of our members, but volunteering with us is also a fantastic way to build friendships and connections. You'll become part of a tight-knit community of like-minded individuals who share a common passion for sailing. It's an opportunity to forge new relationships, learn from others, and create lasting memories both on land and at sea.

Ready to get involved and make a difference? We encourage you to reach out and become part of our volunteer team. To express your interest or ask any questions, please email us at training@orcv.org.au. We can't wait to hear from you and welcome you into our community of dedicated trainers.

Join us today, and together, let's build a strong sailing community on land while ensuring our members stay safe on the open seas. Volunteer with ORCV and be the reason behind safer and more enjoyable sailing experiences for all.

The Indomitable Jean Socrates

Sailing Legend Jeanne Socrates, world record breaking solo sailor, remains the oldest person to have sailed round the world "singlehandedly, unassisted and non-stop via the Five Great Capes" when she finished in September 2019. After 340 days at sea, then aged 77yrs, this was Jeanne’s third attempt due to disasters on her previous two attempts.

Inspired by Jeanne’s tenacity and determination, passionate young local keelboat sailor Melissa Warren and ORCV General committee member ,facilitated a lively interview this week with Jeanne, who is currently “across the ditch” in NZ, with a keen audience at Royal Brighton Yachtmelissa

Jeanne’s sailing journey started with early retirement at age 50yrs along with her husband with their shared dream to ”go cruising” and  circumnavigate the world, choosing a sea kindly Najad 380 cruising boat “Nereida”. Jeanne undertook as many theory sail training courses as she could and enjoyed the camaraderie of crewed boats whilst learning on the job.

With the death of her husband in 2003 due to cancer, her determination to see their shared dream accomplished was not diminished and determined to continue with their original plan, she entered the 2006 Transpac as her first ocean race “going solo”!

Continuing her all solo adventures, experiences have been from sublime to hair raising, and she has suffered damage to both her boats and her body, falling from the top of a ladder when loading her boat for her last circumnavigation. An unfortunate painful delay for the plucky Jeanne, with three months in hospital requiring surgery for nasal, vertebral and multiple rib fractures. But no faltering in her focus on starting out again, so in November 2018, she set off this time from North America for her third circumnavigation attempt to clinch the world record title as the world’s oldest person to sail around the Five Great Capes.

Now aged 81 years, her boat remains her home and her companion and she continues to sail the global cruising lifestyle, stopping off to explore and meet new people along the way.

Jeanne’s presentation was both inspiring and timely, her calm and cheerful delivery and words of wisdom were relatable for all.

  • Age is no barrier.
  • Learning/ gaining knowledge is important.
  • Failure to prepare is to prepare to fail.
  • Experience gained is a masterful teacher when things go wrong.
  • Stay calm in a crisis - full focus only on the moment and the most important job to be done.
  • Always sail with autopilot set to wind to reduce the risk of crash gybes.

On managing the isolation of solo sailing, Jeanne always feels at one with her boat as her companion in the team.  Her advice for a successful journey -

  • Look after yourself.
  • The importance of nutritious food for body and soul and the value of the ritual of cooking the evening meal and celebrating important events.
  • Managing sleep with more daytime hours allows for less sleep at night when shipping, weather, and other hazards are more challenging.

A remarkable women,Jeanne’s indomitable determination, resilience and resourcefulness is truly inspiring for all and her presentation elicited a standing ovation. Thank you Jeanne for sharing your journey and inspiring others.  Keep up to date with Jean Socrates voyages here.

From “inspiration” to “aspiration”, back in Australia on the other side of “the ditch”, there are opportunities for women aspiring to get into sailing to get on board and see how far you can go.

The Keelboat Introduction to Sailing Savvy (KISS) 2024 program, established in 2022 by  Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club’s Immediate Past Commodore Lee Renfree in partnership with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria has now graduated 52 women over two years, empowering them to transition over a 14 week period from May to August, from “passengers” to active, confident “participants”. The KISS 2024 Launch kicks off Wednesday 15 May with a panel of three previous program graduates presenting on “Facing Your Fears”.

So if you are female and keen to gain skills on keelboats, jump on board now as places are limited and are filling fast. Why not “Bring a Friend - Make a Friend - Find a Friend” and we will aim to place you on the same boat for skills training.
