The ORCV's Melbourne to Stanley yacht race starts off Queenscliff and finishes at Stanley in Northwestern Tasmania. It is held each year on the Melbourne Cup long weekend. Please also note, that this is a qualifying race for both of the Melbourne to Hobart races, the Rolex Sydney Hobart yacht race but not required for the Melbourne to Devonport race. However, some crews still choose to do Stanley as practice for Australia's oldest ocean race across Bass Strait- the Rudder Cup.

The Melbourne to Stanley race started in some rather unexpected circumstances this year: after many weekends during the Helly Hansen Winter Series preparing for high seas and gusty winds in Bass Strait, the wind was reluctant to offer much push at all
Calm and its 14 member crew forged an early lead and continued to open up the gap for a resounding line honours victory, followed in, less than two hours later, by Gusto.
The 15 knot winds that greeted the fleet of the 2012 Melbourne to Stanley race as they neared completion last night must have seemed like a gale compared to the calm Bass Strait they were sailing on all yesterday.
As frontrunner Calm comes to within 15NM of Stanley to make what is certain to be two years in a row for Stanley line honours, the majority of the fleet has passed the halfway mark of the race.
Winds are yet to pick up as most of the fleet comes to about a third of the way through the course. It’s tough to get pace but conditions are pleasant on the water with waves of one to two metres.
