HF Radio to Be Phased Out of Racing

The future of racing communications for the ORCV is shifting toward satellite-based systems. Over the past two years, the majority of the fleet has already transitioned to satellite solutions for their boats' communication for our Cat-2 race needs over HF radio.
While no formal date has been set for the retirement of HF radio, this trend reflects a broader move toward more modern, reliable technology.
The adoption of satellite systems has already delivered noticeable improvements in race communications and position reporting (skeds). These systems offer greater reliability, higher-quality connections, and simpler reporting processes. They also reduce barriers to entry for new competitors, who will no longer need to install and maintain expensive HF equipment.
Contemporary low-Earth-orbit satellite networks, in particular, are providing faster and more dependable connectivity for offshore fleets. This enables clearer, more consistent communication throughout races.
These changes are designed to strengthen the ORCV racing program into the future, preserving the safety for offshore competition while evolving to meet the needs of today’s sailors and the realities of the ocean environment.
Further details will be shared in upcoming newsletters and later this year.
