The KISS Workshop "the Perfect Pitch"

The KISS  2024 program, now in its final four-week sprint to the finish, saw fifty women from the KISS Class of 2024 undertake a full day of hands-on training at the ORCV Albert Park office on Sunday 28 July.

Presentations developed “by women for women” with content focussed on the group’s needs and predominantly delivered by female presenters, were “pitch perfect” and applauded by the 50 strong audience.

Four groups rotated through four sessions covering -

  • VHF Radio Theory (Marg Goddard, Vicki Bayly)
  •  VHF Radio Practical (Grant Dunoon, Catherine North) - thanks to Albert Sailing Club for accommodating these sessions
  •  (Wo)Man Over Board (Vanessa Twigg, Rosie Colahan)
  • Lifejacket self servicing provided by the team from Safe Transport Victoria (STV - Vanessa Spark, Laura Doan, Lisa Marquez, Felicia  Affandi, Sarah Jones, Mayram Raji)

    KISS 50 attendees

The team from STV, disappointed they did not have the opportunity to sit in on other sessions, were so delighted with the enthusiasm of the KISS women, they are signing themselves up for the KISS 2025 program, which is now reaching 50% subscribed.

Lunch of heartwarming homemade soups provided by the committee members ensured plenty of food for both thought and soul and session breaks allowed women time to reconnect with their club teams and others.

The final exercise for the day saw Dunk-In, a disengaged MOB manikin lounging in the naughty corner, dragged to the balcony. Despite his lack of co-operation, the women deftly retrieved him from the virtual water, raised him by halyard and handy billy over the lifelines and delivered him to the shelter of the car boot. Thanks to RBYC for loaning him out before his next date.

KISS 2024 participant Colette summed up her day -

“I just wanted to say thank you for an amazing day yesterday - I learned so much and had terrific fun at the same time. All four workshops were superb, perfectly pitched I thought. And the soups were wonderful too!! Thanks for another wonderful experience”.

Not only, but also, Colette picked up a fabulous red wet gear jacket at an excellent price in the Silent Auction which has raised funds to further develop and extend the program.

Still to go, our final two webinars Passage Planning (6 August) and KISS Passage Rally Briefing (22 August) with the crowning glory, the KISS Passage Rally on Saturday 24 August from Brighton to Queenscliff with our KISS women in lead roles of Helm, Navigator and Radio Operator and a night of celebration at “Paradise” on Sand Island, that is the Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club.

Strap in for the ride!!!
