Melb to Stan map

Ocean Race: 152 nm

Race Start: 2300 AEDT, off Queenscliff on Friday, 30th October 2015

Event Category:  2

The ORCV's Melbourne to Stanley yacht race starts off Queenscliff and finishes at Stanley in Northwestern Tasmania. It is held each year on the Melbourne Cup long weekend.

Please also note, that this is a qualifying race for both of the Melbourne to Hobart races, the Rolex Sydney Hobart yacht race but not required for the Melbourne to Devonport race. However, some crews still choose to do Stanley as practice for Australia's oldest ocean race across Bass Strait- the Rudder Cup.

Never too long to wait.

The thing about the Southern climes is that you never have to wait too long for the scenario to change.

Here in Stanley, it has gone quite cold.

Out on the water, the news is that Calm and Scarlet Runner must be throwing water bombs at each other, they are now that close. They are sitting atop Three Hummock island, but have slowed in there, whilst Gusto and XLR8, behind them and closer to the rhumbline are doing 7s and 8s respectively. There is near as 30nm left to travel for the leaders, but it is a huge diffrence in time between 10knots and just the two, they are showing now.

2011_CMS_R1_CalmUphill

Calm racing on Port Phillip recently.

Either way, the record may be a bit of a stretch, but 8-9pm is possible. Reports from fleet now indicate they have 18-20knots out of the South to Sou'west. Forecast still indicating 20 to 25 for next few hours, with 30 possible offshore - all from the South. it is then meant to get a tad quiet close in here to Stanley as the night wears on. Clouds amassed here now in Stanley as dusk approaches and Hobart says they could have snow on the hills. Pack the Tshirts away...

Earlier on in the day, Nutcracker was doing well, but has just fallen away a little. Say Goodbye to MS is still giving it plenty and fighting with boats a bit bigger than her. As one would expect, eXtasea are doing well, with Cadibarra8 also in the mix. Spirit of Downunder enjoyed the reaching conditions of earlier in the day, but may find the going hard once the sheets have to wound on. XLR8 has also relished the conditions from earlier and shown great speed to hang on to the much larger Gusto, who are currently leading the charge for the six Hutchwilco PFDs that are the prize for winning the Pereformance Handicap System. XLR8 were on the radio just a little while ago getting all the weather information they could to be in a position to have the right sails around as it goes dark. Arch Rival and Slinky Malinky, who are making a bit of return to the ocean, are powering on, as well.

From a little while ago, Neville Rose reported from mid-fleet that, "Wind models from various sources are still proving to be very unreliable. The two fronts that went through last night and the trough passing through Bass Strait now with a 180 degree kink in its isobars, are likely to blame. Aboard Dry White we currently have 7knots from the NW. Biggest bag up, very flat Paddock (Bass Strait). Very pleasant. Sloppier swell on Starboard. Most observations around NW tip of Tassie are not suggesting anywhere near the wind strength we were expecting from yesterday's forecast. Several more pods on dolphins playing in the bow wave this morning."

Right then, we had 37 vessels in the M2S, but Chikara Outlaw withdrew a few days ago, so it's 36 now - Addiction, Alibi, Alien, Arch Rival, Bandit, Biddy Hu II, Cadibarra 8, Calm, Cavarlo, Dekadence, Dark and Stormy, Dry White, eXtasea, FullyNPushing, Gusto, Halcyon, Independent Endeavour, Jazz Player, Kiss Goodbye to MS, Magazan 53, Magic, Matrix, Mille Sabords, Mirrabooka, Nutcracker, Pretty Woman, Scarlet Runner, Slinky Malinky, Spirit of Downunder, Tevake II, Trybooking.com, Under Capricorn, Weekend Option, White Noise, XLR8 and Yoko, which is excellent. Well done and good luck to all.

Short Sleeves!

Short sleeves in Bass Strait! Not sure I even remember that, but there you have it. That's what they are experiencing aboard Dry White, at present. We thought it might have been shots from a different time, but some of the crew have not been on the boat at the same time, so we just have to accept it as the truth, hard as it may be!

Many thanks to Sailor Kaz (Young) for the great images and wonderful commentary below. She's a lovely person and handy yachty, too. Over to you, Kaz. "Now who said ocean racing needs to be hard work? After a night of constant drizzle and rain in the pen at Queenscliff, we set of with a reasonably light start for our charge out through the Heads and off to Stanley. The trip through the Heads was unusualy calm and if not for the appearance of a little ocean swell, you could have been mistaken for thinking that we were still inside the Bay."

DW_JohnW

Up the pointy end with John Weatherley.

"Far from the forecast bad weather, we have so far been pleasantly surprised with blue sky and sunshine. Dots of colour have sprung up all around the horizon as the boats, us included, try out the various spinnaker options we have, to find the one that will propel us through the fleet the quickest!"

"Despite the constant Melbourne radio broadcasts alerting us to strong winds, we've rolled the banana lounges onto the deck, the layers have gradually come off and the sunscreen been applied. The Minister For All Things Interior has excelled on our boat. I cannot remember the last time I have been offered smoked salmon and cream cheese wraps as a snack! Nor can I remember the last time I was treated to the wonderful sight of so many 'hard core yachting blokes' prancing about in thermal underwear. Oh the joys - how much can one girl take?"

DW_DonF

Keeping out of the sun is Commodore, Don Fraser.

"Of course the downside of our 'pleasure cruise' is the sacrifice of good racing wind speed, but hey, I guess you can't have it all? And if there's going to be light-ish winds for a little while, then you may as well partake in the finer pleasures whilst you are waiting for the wind God to roll in. Please note that in this instance the term, 'finer pleasures', definitely applies to our catering and not the men in tights!"

"Roll in Huey!" (God of wind)

DW_SimonD

Simon Dryden driving and I love this image for the red kite on the horizon. Now that would be some motivation to keep in front!

In Stanley currently it is around 18 degrees with Nor'west breezes in the low teens... Peter Blake's record with Kontrol, of 14 hours and 36 minutes looks reasonably safe for the moment. The leaders would have to be in by 1930hrs tonight, which is doable, but the breeze may not hold in long enough. All will be revealed at the 1805hrs sked, of course.

Dorothy's on track.

The transponder for Scarlet Runner has not updated since 0800hrs, which is why they appear to be 40nm astern of Calm. In reality, they are a bit over 4nm in front!

2011_CMS_R1_SRkite

At the noon sked, Dry White reported a Nor'west breeze of 8knots on a less than half metre sea. Yoko had 12knots WNW and a half metre sea.

YBexplanation1

The highlighted section shows that the tracker last updated at 0800hrs AEDT. Many thanks to Peter Clancy for the quick tutorial, too!!!

YBexplanation2

Here, I put the cursor on Scarlet's approximate position (displayed just above the yellowbrick logo) and using the ruler, highlighted in red, I went back from there to Calm, so 4nm astern.

YBexplanation3

The windsock is highlighted in red here and this give the Predictwind forecast model's data for the location of the cursor, just a bit ahead of Scarlet Runner. It showed that there was to be 17.5knots from almost due West. Giddy Up!!!!! WooHooooooooo.

Surrounding Images.

The breeze has kicked in as indicated for the boats and Calm is near the front doing around 13 knots as she gets into the Sou'westerlies and opens the sheets to steam on ahead.

From on board Dry White, Rear Commodore, Nevile Rose, tells us "We had Dolphins playing in bow wave earlier with Asymmetric Spinnaker up, but we're back to a Medium Headsail in 12-15 knots from SW."

In the meantime, here are some images of the surrounding areas and Stanley's ultra-famous Nut, which is what all the crews are aiming for.

Road

On the road out of Burnie, heading Nor'west towards Stanley.

Field

The earth is very deep and rich in colour - little wonder so much of the country's vegetables are grown here...

Ploughed

Fields of green and blue skies - yes please.

Nut

Basalt massif known as, The Nut.

RocksAndNut

It's not the only geological wonder in the area, however...

RocksAndClouds

Clouds never too far away...

Rocks

Like some giant croc skin that's been baked to rock hard...

RockPool

Lots of rock pools around...

RockPoolsNut

Just a faint wisp of cloud floats on by...

FlotsamJetsam

Flotsam jetsam (all natural, however), but man's presence not too far away...

NutRockPools

The lapping of the gentle waves on the rocks and yet we're in Tassie... Not what I remember.

Not Much Weather...

Andy Roberts gave us a report on the weather as the day drew to a close in Weather Reporter.

Now, as the next day begins, we see that there is not much weather behinds yesterday's little blast.

TheRipWebCam

There was a fair bit of rain to be had up until 0200hrs and it did a great job of flattening the sea, as you can see above, but left a lot of dark clouds around, as well. At about 0630hrs, with all 36 vessels having got away at 0500hrs, we learn that they are in 3-6knots from the Sou'east on a very milky sea. Hooks in the isobars mean they are looking for wind changes in both direction and velocity, whilst they await the stronger Westerly breezes a little later on. Read plenty of sail changes when reviewing that last sentence!!! There were no problems exiting the Heads and the tinnies in the fishing competition were no issue, either. Some crewmembers were very chatty on the phone... Great stuff.

If you want to follow it all with the pretty graphics via the sat trackers from Yellowbrick - see HERE for Flash empowered devices and HERE for non-Flash.
