Melb to Stan map

Ocean Race: 152 nm

Race Start: 2300 AEDT, off Queenscliff on Friday, 30th October 2015

Event Category:  2

The ORCV's Melbourne to Stanley yacht race starts off Queenscliff and finishes at Stanley in Northwestern Tasmania. It is held each year on the Melbourne Cup long weekend.

Please also note, that this is a qualifying race for both of the Melbourne to Hobart races, the Rolex Sydney Hobart yacht race but not required for the Melbourne to Devonport race. However, some crews still choose to do Stanley as practice for Australia's oldest ocean race across Bass Strait- the Rudder Cup.

Sometimes they love me and other times, well, you know........

2011_MWS_XLR8Bow

We could only be talking about XLR8, of course. Currently, it's a major love-in, after all the good pics and nice words of late. Here's your chance to go and sail on the RP46 (yes, rack up yet another one for me with Jim Pugh) as they need a couple of souls for the run to Stanley. Who know's, you may be able to take the whole thing a tad further, too. SSSC is preferable, but not essential, however, you may want to have sailed on a big boat before and also one that can make its own apparent, fairly easily...

Over to you, but call Ray Shaw on 0403 553 804 to chat about it.

Now then, we have 28 vessels thus far in the M2S - Addiction, Alibi, Alien, Arch Rival, Cadibarra 8, Calm, Chikara Outlaw, Dekadence, Dry White, eXtasea, Gusto, Halcyon, Independent Endeavour, Jazz Player, Kiss Goodbye to MS, Magazan 53, Magic, Matrix, Mille Sabords, Nutcracker, Pretty Woman, Scarlet Runner, Slinky Malinky, Spirit of Downunder, Trybooking.com, Under Capricorn, Weekend Option and White Noise, which is good, but we know there are a few mor eto go, yet... Who's next? It's a lot easier to do this race than get your crew orgainsed to do your own qualifying passage, plus the seafood and hospitality of our friends in Stanley really are awesome. Cop this for a steak sandwich!

Kotter.

You know! Welcome back....

Ken Simpson is best known presently for sailing the boat with the hull graphic that always gets a snap. The Radford Sprint 35 - Silk - from the Squady.

Silk2

Tha boat also gets to do a fair bit with the annual Women's Keel Boat Regatta, as well. Now there's a new member. The DK46 that was so well campaigned by her original owner, Phil Coombs. Yep - Dekadence is back!

DekadenceLR

They left Hobart on Friday, September 30 with the boat, bound for the Heads. "Yes. We got back from Hobart on the Sunday. It was a great trip, taking around 54 hours. We had 45 to 48 knts at Tasman Island then reached through Banks Strait and on to the Heads, with boat easily getting on to towards 20 knots. Thankfully, we caught slack water at 1700hrs and thence it was back to Melbounre, where she belongs", said Ken.

Overall they seem to be very pleased with it all as they spruce her up and get all the safety audit arranged, so as to be ready for Stanley. Ken is no stranger to the blue, having gone and stuck the nose of Ocean Road, a previous boat, into Bass Strait and beyond many times. There'd be 40 odd ORCV events and the fateful 1998 Sydney Hobart in that lot. "We're going to keep Silk as the Bay Racer and use Dekadence to go offshore. I like the idea of the Eastcoaster this Christmas and next year we may join the Northern Migration for a bit", Ken said of their plans.

So Ken and co, great to see her back and look forward to seeing you all in Stanley and then Hobart.

Now then, we have 26 vessels thus far in the M2S - Addiction, Alibi, Alien, Arch Rival, Cadibarra 8, Calm, Chikara Outlaw, Dekadence, Dry White, eXtasea, Gusto, Halcyon, Independent Endeavour, Jazz Player, Kiss Goodbye to MS, Magazan 53, Magic, Matrix, Mille Sabords, Nutcracker, Pretty Woman, Scarlet Runner, Slinky Malinky, Spirit of Downunder, Trybooking.com and White Noise, which is good, but we know there are a few mor eto go, yet... Here's the ticket!

Yep. If you're looking for a ride in the 2011 Hutchwilco Melbourne to Stanley Yacht Race, then in Biddy Hu II has your ticket.

The Beneteau 50 needs an SSSC ticketed person to go with them, so don't call if you have not done the course. BTW the next one is on Nov 26 and 27, which is not in time for the race, alas. You can book yourself in now and get sorted for Xmas, by going HERE. Anyway, Paul Lindemann tells us the jacuzzi is back on board and the disco ball never left, so it sounds like good times aboard the good ship, Biddy Hu II from Royals.

Dorothy.

As in, follow the Yellow Brick Road.

Yes, we could have also gone with the Knight's seminal alblum as the theme, but we didn't. Alas, we do have something really awesome to talk about, and that is Trackers. Yep. For the 2011 Hutchwilco Melbourne to Stanley race, the fleet will carry these über-cool devices that not only add to the overall safety aspects of the race (a very ORCV'eee thing to do), but mean the shore crew can see your every move, as well. Yes!

As used by other great events, like the Rolex Fastnet Race and as you can see from the pic, the Velux Five Oceans, these small and reliable devices require no external wiring, as they are completely and utterly self contained. They are also fully automatic, and naturally, water and weatherproof. All you need to do is mount the small, lightweight unit (Only weighs 400g!!!!!! - height 10cm, width 14.5cm, depth 3.5cm) to the pushpit and you're away. From that very moment on, we'll all be able to watch the full situation unfold via this website.

As an added bonus, you can even send us a short message from your media device via its Bluetooth connection. Happy about that, or what?!

YellowbrickTrackers

Rocking. Simply rocking.... (NB. The cord you see here is not a wire, but a a safety lanyard...)

Now then, we have 18 vessels thus far in the M2S - Addiction, Alien, Arch Rival, Calm, Dekadence, Dry White, Gusto, Jazz Player, Kiss Goodbye to MS, Magazan 53, Magic, Matrix, Mille Sabords, Scarlet Runner, Slinky Malinky, Spirit of Downunder, Trybooking.com and White Noise, which is about two thirds of what you might expect as a fleet for this race... Who's next? It's a lot easier to do this race than get your crew orgainsed to do your own qualifying passage, plus the seafood and hospitality of our friends in Stanley really are awesome.

So who's this, then?

Trybooking.com is an Elan 434 from the Royal Brighton Yacht Club. They've done things like the Boxing Day Dash before, so when they popped on to the entries list for Stanley, we thought it was a good time to ask the question.

IMG_2221

Grant Dunoon is the proud skipper of this 2006 build vessel and we got to not only ask who they are, but what might be next on the cards....

"Thank you for your interest in us. We are all very much looking forward to the race. It feels like two years in the making for us, as our crew of seven souls is made up of RBYC Sabotparents. All of us have/had children in the RYBC program for the last five years and its only in the last two years that we all got together as a crew to do the Wednesday twilight racing. This is what has led us to now", said Grant.

IMG_4292

Kim Walker, the Tactician, has the helm for bit...

IMG_4335

Left to right it is Kate Parker, Mike Hodgson and Ross Fisher.

"I will be overseas this Christmas, but hope to be back for Geelong Week and then with the view of doing both the Port Fairy and Apollo Bay races, followed by the Melbourne to Hobart in 2012. Unfortunately, King Island clashes with a work commitment", he said. Ed. Never fear. We'll eat your steak sandwiches for you...

IMG_2222

More Boxing Day Dash action, just after SYC #4.

IMG_4327

Plenty of this where you're going!

IMG_4314

Excellent stuff and we hope you get a lot from it all, team.

Just what we like to see - people taking it on and going and sticking their noses in it (Bass Strait, that is...). Right. 15 vessels thus far for M2S - Addiction, Alien, Arch Rival, Calm, Dry White, Gusto, Jazz Player, Kiss Goodbye to MS, Magazan 53, Magic, Mille Sabords, Slinky Malinky, Spirit of Downunder, Trybooking.com and White Noise.
