Simon & I will be hosting a help session for the Practical Navigator assignment this Thursday evening for anyone interested in some further assistance. We will be going through Leg 2 – Mooloolaba-Garry's. Hopefully you have already seen the tips for Leg 1 here. Click here for planning tips
From the assignments to date I have noted the following;
• You need to have a very clear understanding of the differences between Magnetic Bearing and True Bearing. Essentially if you are giving a course to steer, it is generally given in Magnetic. For those of you using Navionics, you need to be confident converting the True bearing to Magnetic and also the reverse when you are taking sites to confirm your position
• The following locations are time/tide sensitive - Wide Bay Bar & Boonlye Point - in that you need to be there at high tide. So they a "not Negotiable" time and the remainder of the passage then has to be worked around those times. There are other locations such as the Mooloola Bar and Datum Point (near Urangan) that are also tide sensitive so your times must also account for them. Generally you should be able to join things up but if you cannot, then a plan B must be implemented such as a difference route or forced stopover.
• As for Q15 - you will find tidal streams there. It's a bit hard to see on Navionics (see below) as it just says 3KN with a little wave symbol but if you put your cross hairs on it, it'll show that it's a flooding tidal stream. The Admiralty chart shows a more visible view
I look forward to seeing you online this Thursday. Feel free to contact us for further information.
