MELBOURNE TO OSAKA - Japan

ORCV-logo_G_[OCEANRACING]_PNG

Ocean Race of 5500 nautical miles

Race Start is off Portsea Pier at Slack Water, Port Phillip Heads.
STOP PRESS:
Originally designated a Category Zero- race, it is now a Category One+, with a starting window in the second half of March, 2013.
Please download the  Notice Of Race (V1.10) for additional information.
Category: 1+

Description:
First run in 1987, the Osaka Cup starts in the first weeks of April. Massive two-handed fleets marked the early races and the next event in 2013 is set to make a very global statement about short-handed events. The race is also a true test of complete seamanship as crews go through all manner of prevailing weather, from the Roaring Forties to the Horse Latitudes, the Doldrums, Tropics and Asiatic systems. Please see the Notice of Race on this website for the specific starting time.

The 2013 M2O has been announced and the first Expression of Interest has already been received.

Sister cities Melbourne, Australia and Osaka, Japan are proud to be offering this great event to celebrate 35 years since formally creating their relationship. The 2013 incarnation will be the eighth time this huge 5500nm two-handed race has been conducted since 1987.

The Melbourne host will be the Sandringham Yacht Club, whilst Osaka Hokko Yacht Club will be attending to all formalities in Japan. The Ocean Racing Club of Victoria will be administering the on-water activities of Australia's only Category Zero yacht race.

The Race Committee is keen to review all potential racing opportunities, including things like Class 40. The potential three week starting time window has been proposed to allow vessels of differing speeds to arrive in Osaka at a similar time. Please contact ORCV Vice Commodore, Simon Dryden to discuss your requirements: +61 418 145 909 and

Preparation well underway for Osaka.

Entrants for Osaka, Turbulence and Escapade were out practising their skills in the Hobsons Bay Double-Handed race on Sunday. Fresh south-westerlies strengthened throughout the race and Turbulence and the Secretary had a close tussle on the last leg with Turbulence getting ahead at the Williamstown breakwater.

Osaka Flag Flies High.

At the recent ORCV AGM and Presentation night held at Hobsons Bay Yacht Club, two entrants in the Melbourne to Osaka race were presented with backstay flags for their boats. Laurie Ford and his son will make the trip to Japan aboard Spirit of Downunder. Eric Marsh needed a wheelbarrow to take home his prizes with success in the ORCV Helly Hansen Winter Series, an Osaka flag and winner of the Helly Hansen door prize on the evening!

"Rip" Tour of Port Phillip Heads.

Do you want to escape the restriction of our vast Port Phillip Bay and venture outside to try out some ocean sailing in Bass Strait? For this you must first know how to safely enter and exit the bay through its very narrow opening -  affectionately called "the Rip".

Find out how to get out of the bay and into Bass Strait by attending our next “Rip Tour” on Sunday the 21st of October, 2012. Make sure you are part of this informative and hands-on training session. Register now to secure your place.

To Osaka: From Fremantle

“He sent me an email about a year ago and said, ‘What do you say we do the Melbourne-Osaka?’ says Trevor Taylor, 58. “I sent back, ‘Do you think we’ll put up with each other for a month or so?’ and he said, ‘We’ll only see each other at change of watch’.
