Melbourne Latitude Series (MLS)

This one goes to eleven!

How could one not use the classic Spinal Tap line?! That's right. One could not. It's simply that good a line.

Moving on then, we have eleven starters in the MLS this weekend. They are as wide and varied in there reasons for partaking, as the types of vessels they are brining. Ultimately, that is exactly what the MLS is all about - training and preparing for bigger adventures.

Boats like BBB (aka Gusto) are going out to find out more about the boat and their sail inventory, even though they did use everything that was onboard when they took Line Honours in the recent M2S. They're booked in for the mighty Westcoaster at Christmas and must be praying for strong winds from the West to Nor'west to speed them on their way and have a cracking go at Shortwave's über-impressive record (in 2008, the Judel-Vrolijk penned TP52 took an impressive five and a half hours off the old record and set 1:17:28:59 in the process). Alas, BBB's one boat that could do it!

Steve Campbell supervises the re-launch and velow, Addiction came home in the 2010 M2S under trisail.

M2S_2010_Addiction_FinishLR

There's also the RMYS Inglis pair of Beyond Outrageous and the newly back in the drink after her significant re-fit at Steve Campbell's Composites Constructions, Addiction. Addiction will be skippered by Janina Goethel, who heads the Organising Committee of the Australian Womens Keelboat Regatta. Deja Vu are slated for this year's new M2L Cruising Rally and Chikara Outlaw, who have been great ORCV competitors, are booked in for an Eastcoaster this Christmas. Deliverance is an S&S 30 and we've seen her doing some of the preparatory races just recently on Port Phillip. We had Avanale head out the Heads last year and she's the same sort of vessel and was the smallest by a whole foot, from our original HCOTW and current, Most Sporting Crew On The Water, the wonderful, Godzilla.

ZillaHome

Two boats who are no strangers to these pages are Ninety Seven and Yoko. Ninety Seven are doing the M2L Racing Division this year and a chance at the record. They're heading out as they have some fairly new crew and using it all as a bit of shakedown before the Xmas fun. As for Robin and Yoko, well I have simply no idea how many sailors Robin, the crew and Yoko have helped go and stick their nose out in it, over the years. It must be in the hundreds. 29 consecutive Westcoasters for them this year - and that's well and truly another record and quite likely, one that will never be broken.

Note to self - Titling at Windmills is back from a global voyage of some number of years - must ask Thorry Gunnersen for some details....

So there you have it. The MLS goes to 11. As for the big weather thingy - well, we'll just see what the Brass turns up on that matter soon.

So kick back and turn up the amp to 11 - for that final kick to move the crowd along...

Back in Black.

No - it is not Aka Daka (that's AC/DC btw), but serial ORCV racer, Spirit of Dowunder, that's back - and how. A new, 200kg lighter, carbon stick is the main feature with PBO standing rigging another element of the sexed up, new NZ Rigging package installed by Bart, who also plays aboard Living Doll. Xmas plans for SoD would seem to include the Heemskirk Consolidated M2HW. Before that, Laurie 'Lozza' Ford and the gang are looking closely at the MLS, as a way to pick up a bit of ocean work before the big stuff at Xmas. Let's see what transpires.

New stick all done by the evening of Wednesday November 3rd.

SODfaces_061110

Happy faces - no doubt glad to be back out on the water... ORCV Honorary Treasurer, Neil Butler, is near the vang.

SODsailing_061110

No doubt it'll add to the performance.

Now there's another boat definitely using the MLS as a chance to go and stick their nose out in it, even though they don't really need the sea miles, but think it valuable to learn more about themselves and the boat.

He of the countdown timer, new ORCV Committee Member, Jeremy Walton says, "Just thought I would let you know that Gusto will be doing the upcoming Latitude races as part of our preperation for the M2HW race at Christmas. We are keen to keep on developing our knowledge of BBB and just what she is capable of and see the MLS as a valuable way to continue our training for Ocean Racing and Sailing."

"We will doing the stern chaser back, as well and cannot wait to see what start time the Race Director gives us........ To complete the three race series we will be doing the RBYC Lady Nelson/FD Linacre overnight race on 11th Feb next year." Ed. Yes. That will be interesting - may the Southerly have kicked in by then. I'm sure Brian will want to take it out and I think you can be assured of a sleep in, which is a good thing for the boss...

Here's BBB during her first foray - the 2010 M2G.

Please also remember there is the Latitude Seminar on Thursday 11/11/10. Good info on sailing, crew management, rations etc - see HERE for that one...

Never Fear, there will be.

Mystery Man, but not Women!

Many thanks to the "Mystery Man" for the onboard pics from 'Spirit of Freya' during Saturday's Bass Strait Latitude Race. I love the way it shows the Rip. Even on a calm day, it can be very "interesting", as Kevin Robinson from 'No Fearr' commented over the radio...

SOF_NoFearrInRip

Kevin Robinson onboard his 'No Fearr' as seen from 'Spirit of Freya', as they traverse the "interesting" conditions of a NE breeze on the remnants of an ebb tide. Better than in a humping SW with the resultant swell, however...

Now as to the Women. Well, they are no mystery at all. As to their ID that is... As for anything else, well I am NOT touching that area whatsoever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Back me up anytime now, please Miss Jane, Kate, Fee, JA, Jo, Helen, Lisa, Gillian... Anyway. We have a pic of Joanne Harpur on the wheel, as she brought her 'Spirit of Freya' through the Heads. We also have Doctor Rosie (Colahan), who was onboard as a Mentor, and she is pictured in the companionway, relaying info to the Skipper.

Moving on (thankfully), the other pics are of our delightful Rip and as I say, I think it's great to see that even on a fairly benign day, the Malley's (Whirpool) is still in action. See for yourself...

Rock on and so good to see the women taking charge!

Even where there's nothing - in the Rip, there's always something!

SOF_Rip3

Awareness is key to successful crossings of the Rip - to the conditions, the tides, the wind, the swell and importantly, the Yankee Foxtrots - especially the slow ones. See the "Slug" HERE.

The most colourFULL man

in Australian yachting lives on.

Skippers and crews enjoyed the great hospitality that we have become accustomed to from our hosts at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron last night and again this morning.  Many thanks again to the BYS Commodore, Brian Fitzpatrick, Vice Commodore Jenni Maclean, Rear Commodore Brian Smith and General Manager, Gerard Clarke.

ORCV members and participants are looking forward to BYS's hospitality again after the Cock of the Bay race on Boxing Day.

Prizes were awarded to the following for the MLS, Bass Strait Latitude Race at BYS last night:

1st. Kevin Robinson, No Fearr from RBYC

2nd. Joanne Harpur, Spirit of Freya from RBYC and

3rd. Burggraaf Hibbert, Remedy from RMYS

The other prize presented last night, was the inaugural -

"Megga" (Geoff Bascombe) Novice Skipper Award.

"Megga" passed away on November 10th, whilst delivering a Volvo 60 from Darwin to Hong Kong. His passing has been felt throughout the ocean sailing community and the ORCV is proud to honour the country's most colourFull character with this award. Kathryn De Garis, from RBYC with her Beneteau 35, 'Allegresse', is the first winner. "It's an honour to have received this and from what Nifty has told me about him, they're very big shoes to fill. I understand he was always there to help people like me, so I am sure he would find it very fitting", Kathryn commented.

I'm hoping this is Kathryn driving - if it isn't, well you know the drill by now....

At 08:05, the BYS to SYC Pursuit Race pre-race Sign On sched time, the BOM forecast was for SW 10 to 20 knots. The actual picture at BYS was a little different, however. Heavy rain, very little wind and the online weather observations from around Victoria showed that the weather systems moving towards us had in fact slowed: Result. Postpone for one hour. So where as the little S&S30 'Harmony' had been listed for a 09:00 start, they did in fact get away at 10:00, with the last boat to go, 'Schuss', crossing the start line at 11:22.

As Race Director, Nifty would like to thank 'No Fearr' for going and visiting 'Chikara Outlaw' in the berth next door to them, to wake them (they must have made a great night of it) for the pre-race Sign On sched. 'Chikara Outlaw' apologised profusely for their tardiness, but stressed that they were under the impression that the Race Director had actually advised everyone last night, that the pre-race sign on sched was in fact at 09:00. Not likely for two reasons. 1. Radio silence time and 2. Designated departure for the first boat, 'Harmony'.

As the adjusted starting time approached and the rain gave way to more of a misty shower and generally overcast view, Nifty opted to call the Warning Signal and Start Signal times over the VHF radio, rather than fire the White and Green Flares, which were unlikely to be sighted by competing yachts given the conditions, or so he believed.

Yoko's radio operator objected to this, stating that this was unfair, given the crews were required to be out in the rain and thought the race starter should also be out in the rain. Yoko's objection was duly noted, considered and then summarily dismissed. What would you come to expect from a Navi-guesser who's more inclined to being down below in his Smoking Jacket and slippers, than his wets!

Conditions had definitely improved as 'Harmony' began at 10:00, with the rain lightening right off and wind building from the SW at 10 - 15 knots. By 12:00, roughly near South Channel Mark #19, there was very close racing between 'Chikara Outlaw', 'The Secretary' and 'No Fearr'.  Shortly thereafter, our back marker,' Schuss' rounded the same mark, hoisted her spinnaker and headed North for home.

First home was in fact 'Remedy', then 'Chikara Outlaw' and 'Escapade' from HBYC. Newbie Skipper Kathryn and the team on 'Allegresse' were nearly there with a 4th. Remedy actually beat ORCV Mobile to the finish line and Nifty would like to thank 'Chikara Outlaw' for relaying 'Remedy's time. All home inside 40 minutes of each other, so well done Mr/Ms Handicapper!
