There are many sources of weather information available to us. As sailors, it is imperative that we:
The ORCV Meteorological Course can be completed in any of three ways. You may undertake either section or as the third alternative, both sections consecutively.
Outcomes
This course is particularly presented as applicable to long-range, blue water sailing such as M2V and M2O, but is just as applicable for M2H and a quick jaunt on the Bay on a sunny Sunday, given where we live and how quickly it can change.
Pre-requisites
Nil for All About The Weather just a healthy interest in understanding your environment while you enjoy blue water yachting.
If you are planning to attend the Yet More Weather section on Sunday, we will expect you to have a comprehension of the basic concepts as presented in the Basic course, ideally together with some oceanic experience.

Course Outline Subjects will include:
Overall, previous students have regarded the course as an excellent guide for their continued self-training in the subject matter.
1. All About The Weather is designed for the beginner or those wishing to refresh their knowledge. It will look at how the weather works, what information sources are available, how to read weather maps and some practical exercises. 2. Yet More Weather is designed to go that bit further with detailed analysis of oceanic weather systems and upper atmosphere maps with specific reference to weather forecasting about Bass Strait, Victorian, Tasmanian, South Eastern Pacific and Coral Sea weather. In the afternoon section, you'll look at routing and weather fax programs, their uses, specific schedules for retrieving information and some practical exercises. 3. From Becalmed to Force 12 is designed to get you from 'ground zero' in a hurry. It is an immersion in weather for both days, where you'll be taken through all modern information and analysis techniques. |

Course Presenter
The key educator will be the informative and entertaining Kenn Batt. Ken grew up around yachts in Tasmania and has completed many significant ocean races. Kenn's name pops up at several yachting events around Australia and as a job he works for the BoM as a Senior Bureau Officer, Tasmania - Antartic Region in Hobart.
