ORCV Helly Hansen Melbourne to Launceston (M2L on 27/12/11)

104 + 134 = Match.

The Grand Old Dame of Australian ocean races is the M2L. This year, she'll be 104, which makes her the oldest ocean race in the land by a fair margin and she is also the fifth oldest on the face of the planet. Nice work!

First run in 1907, after that 60 Guinea Cup was struck by the Editor of Rudder Magazine, the race was run in every decade thereafter, if somewhat sporadically, until the 50's, when the forerunner of the ORCV took it over. By the 60s, the mug was back in the hands of the club, as the race continued on annually, finishing in Devonport at the time. In 2001, the race moved to Launceston, which is a bit closer to Low Head, the original finishing point and continues on today.

After all that history, now would be a good time to announce the Naming Rights sponsor - Helly Hansen. Many thanks to the gang at H/H for their support of this most iconic of races. Their own brand, created in 1877, is pretty iconic too, so you could say it's a bit of an ideal match - and you'd be right! Had to say 134, which is their own number, BTW.

This is from the 2010 M2L and it shows Alan Saunders from Ninety Seven getting a bit of press time, having been the first boat home, and therefore the one to get their hands, albeit super-briefly, on the piece of silver you see down the bottom of this piece.
