Helley Hansen Winter Series Race 6
There were a few boats missing out on the course this morning, probably discouraged by weather forecasts during the week, but those who committed to braving the elements were treated to slightly chilly but otherwise spectacular conditions. There was no waiting around for the race to start this time around, and it was a long course, preparing everyone for the long race down to Geelong on September 8.
Division 1 got away to a cracking start; a little too cracking for some with three boats peeping over the start line early having to return. Goldfinger took advantage of this and the wind to for an early lead that it didn’t relinquish throughout the race.
The wind continued to pick up for the next race but the Division 2 fleet was a bit more restrained and started with out any drama, all boats getting out cleanly.
Wicked was giving the 45 footers a run for their money and Dry White, the only First 40 not to have to return to the start, was doing a great job of holding on to its break. But it was Goldfinger setting a sizzling pace at the head of the race.
With most of the group sailing on the mid-left of the course, XLR8 headed out to the right and coming up to the first turn was keeping close to the front but was just beaten around by Rush.
In Division 2 Addiction was slugging it out with INSX while Halcyon went out wide of the mark.
Wicked and Bombora also continued to battle it out this week. Rounding the mark, Wicked had some problems hoisting the kite and Bombora snuck past, catching the wind straight away to gain some distance.
As the Division 2 boats headed towards the finish line some threatening weather was moving up from the west for the Division 1 fleet to tackle on its last lap.
