THE WESTERN PORT RACE IS BACK!
A short coastal race starting off Queenscliff, out through Port Phillip heads, turn left along the base of the Mornington Peninsular toward Cape Schanck. Around Cape Schanck and into Westernport on the flood tide for a finish at Cowes on the northern side of Phillip Island. This is an ideal race for those new to ocean racing or just new to sailing outside Port Phillip with its short length, proximity to the coast and favourable tides.
It is a Category 3 race with no liferaft requirement. Hopefully, you will have participated in our Latitude Ocean race so this is not your first passage through Port Phillip heads – mentoring assistance is available upon request and don’t forget the ORCV Rip tour is a great way to get the confidence that comes from knowing your way around. The race can be won and lost by navigators and tacticians depending on their use of the available wind and tidal streams. It’s also a great way to take your boat around to Westernport for a bit of cruising or maybe an extended cruise. There is always the option to leave the boat in a marina during the week and return the following weekend for the sail back to Port Phillip. The locals at Cowes, Rhyll and Newhaven yacht clubs will be more than happy to give you some tips on places to visit, anchor and tie up.
This race is part of the Coastal Championship.
