SSSC Full course

Anyone planning to spend time on a boat in open water will find this course both stimulating and enlightening. It is not only of interest to sailors, but also helps shore crew to understand the safety requirements of offshore sailing and the search and rescue process, in the event of an emergency.

For offshore races, at least 50% of the crew, including the skipper when racing in a Category 1 and 2 shall hold a Safety and Sea Survival Course certificate of competence.  It is strongly recommended that for both categories of races all crew members undertake the course.  Please note that it is strongly recommended for both categories of races that ALL crew members undertake this course.

This course is a pre-requisite for ocean racing, not only to meet the safety requirements, but to demonstrate an acceptance of your personal and team responsibilities for safety on board an ocean-going racing yacht.

When do you go for the liferaft? How do you right it if it's capsized? How do you get ready for the Chopper? What is the correct way to strike a flare?

All this and more at the SSSC, so come along, even if you're an old sea dog!

SSSC Update/Revalidation course

The SSSC Update/Revalidation is intended for those who have previously undertaken the Full SSSC and are regular and extensive offshore sailors. Course participants will be expected to bring with you to the course examples of current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) used on vessels you have set to sea on, as well as experiences to share with other attendees. These lessons are valuable and crucial to the learning process for all. Think about it - is it fact that one should always 'Step Up to the Liferaft'???

Course participants will be expected to contribute with boat management strategies they have experienced, including procedures and hard copy samples. These will be incorporated into discussions regarding continual improvement and best practice.
