The ORCV welcomes a multihull back to ocean racing in Melbourne

PECCADILLO, owned and skippered by Charles Meredith is competing in the 2014 Melbourne to Devonport ocean yacht race. Charles is also the Commodore of the Multihull Yacht Club of Victoria (MHYC).

The ORCV welcome's multihulls and regularly have multihulls in our longer Bay races, including the Cock of the Bay, Melbourne to Geelong passage race (the last race of the Winter Series) and our new Beyond the Bay Overnight Challenge.

Bob Tanner (previous Office Manager and current National Safety Equipment Auditor) thinks it may have been 20 years since the last multihull competed in an ORCV ocean race. He recalls OCEAN EMU did the 1994 Melbourne to Devonport Race. It certainly pre-dates any electronic records we have, so we'll have to go digging into the paper archives to confirm. If you're aware of any more recent mulithulls competing in ORCV ocean racing events, please let us know.

The Melbourne to Devonport Ocean Yacht Race is a Category 2 event and the Yachting Australia Special Regulations have different safety requirements for multihulls and monohulls.  The ORCV takes safety seriously and compliance with Yachting Australia Special Regulations for multihulls has some unique challenges. The ORCV have collaborated with MHYC regarding safety compliance aspects for multihulls and ORCV National Safety Equipment Auditors have also liaised with some of their interstate colleagues who have experience with multihulls.
